yikes, aren't these planes supposed to be super reliable or something?

. . .
Crashed on takeoff at around midnight. My guess: load imbalance.

Edit: now it says on landing so the imbalance isn't the issue.
You mentioned load imbalance, one of the most shocking and scariest shot I saw was of a 747...

yep, something shifts and you are a goner. Center weight moves to tail. Tail goes down..nose goes up..and you stall. Not much you can do at such a low altitude.

Taliban says shot down crashed US C-130 plane in Afghanistan - The Express Tribune

Taliban says shot down crashed US C-130 plane in Afghanistan.
JALALABAD: The Taliban Friday claimed to have shot down a C-130 military transport plane in eastern Afghanistan, with Nato confirming that 11 people including six US soldiers were killed in the crash.

Nato did not confirm the cause of the crash but it comes as Afghan forces — backed by Nato special forces and US air support — pushed into the centre of the northern city of Kunduz which was captured by the Taliban on Monday.

“Our mujahideen have shot down a four-engine US aircraft in Jalalabad,” Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter.

“Based on credible information 15 invading forces and a number of puppet troops were killed.”

"The Taliban released a statement saying that they were responsible for the crash but ISAF (NATO’s International Security Assistance Force) said that there had not been any insurgent activity around or near the base when the incident took place, therefore it would seem the Taliban tried to use this as a bit of a publicity stunt."

If Taliban claim turns out to be true than it would be big boost for them and big blow for USA and its allies. Personally it looks like an accident.

Dear readers,

A cause for the crash has not been determined. This is what Major Tony Wickman, a U.S. military spokesperson said: "With a high degree of confidence I can say that an enemy attack did not contribute to the crash. It is under investigation."

Washington: Eleven people, including six US troops, were killed when a C-130 military transport plane crashed today in Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan, an official said.

"The crew and passengers were killed," US Army Colonel Brian Tribus said, noting that five civilian contractors were also on the plane.

The crash occurred at about midnight local time this morning (1930 GMT).

The contractors had been working for "Resolute Support," the NATO-led training mission.

The C-130 Hercules is a cargo plane built by Lockheed Martin. It is powered by four turboprop engines and is used extensively by the military to ship troops and heavy gear.

The C-130 can take off and land on rough, dirt strips and is widely used by the US military in hostile areas.

Jalalabad is in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan.
