NEW DELHI: JNU student leader Kanhaiyar Kumar on Wednesday welcomed the exit of Smriti Irani from the HRD Ministry but said this was no "punishment" for the suicide of dalit student Rohith Vemula.

After Smriti Irani was transferred to the Textiles Ministry, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President said justice had not been served to Vemula, who committed suicide in Hyderabad.

"Justice for Rohith is still awaited. Cabinet reshuffle is not punishment... Bye bye Smriti Irani," the student leader said.

He added that another minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, must be jailed for allegedly harassing Vemula, leading to his suicide.

Vemula was a PhD student at the University of Hyderabad who committed suicide on January 17, triggering widespread protests against Smriti Irani and Dattatreya who were blamed for the suicide.

Five Dalit students, including Vemula, were suspended in September following a clash with a leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Gr8 move by Modi ...but I think to keep RSS happy, the replacement too is an RSS cadre....Smirti is too arrogant and was unnecessarily given high profile berth ..she is an overrated drama queen in govmt..dont know what special thing she used to do to please RSS big boss...She is not even an elected member like Jaitely...Hope Modi sees the correct picture and keep the correct ppl at correct post...

In fact she has lost every election she fought. he arrogance and myopic view of handling the rohit and JNU issue was one of the reason she was shunted , some say her falling out with Amit shah is the main reason.

vemula and 5 others were suspended for beating up their college president, not because they were Dakota

it's not the fault of a HRD minister that somebody killed himself
110000 people commit suicide each year in India but only 200 odd suicides get media attention because of chance of high trp
