If I had watched this as a Kid , I would have gone into with the ending .

Yup! Recently it occured to me there is somewhat of a link to the story of Jesus....being Christmas and all.

Of course as a kid I would just cry...wondering why?????

Parts of some anime have made me go into depression .
After such sad scenes , I find it hard to Breathe

As a Kid , I loved these Christmas Songs and Tunes .
Jingle bells Jingle Bells Jingle all the way !!!

LOL ok. But I was reminded when you said "depression". This one takes that to a whole new level...it was so brilliantly done....sometimes I watch just the start on youtube, knowing how the ending is and how it is linked to the start....and I get a tear in the eye.

Its like Schindlers list, its a sad distressing movie to watch....but a masterpiece of human spirit at the same time.....to think people like these really existed and went through what they did....and still kept their humanity intact in the end!

I for one cannot only watch happy endings only!

No its a WW2 anime movie. I will bring it up at some other time if you ever feel like you want to watch something heartmoving/sad.

Also make sure this version is english Subbed with original Japanese audio.

That is much better than the english dubbing version (Esp the Disney version).

I prefer Anime in Japanese Audio .
I go for English Dubs , If they are as good as Pokemon , Bleach , Naruto , Death Note etc

Yah it was released at the same time as Totoro.

Totoro was the "happy" movie, Fireflies was the "sad" one. Many kids were pretty traumatised by "Fireflies", so it is not as well known as Totoro today.....but in many ways it is the more significant movie. As a kid, I had no idea what it would be about, we just saw the ad on TV for it and we taped it....I could barely get past the start the first few times....and I made it through only once all the way (and one more time as a grown up)....and it scarred me for life....but it always is in the back of my head when I think of what war means....why we should never be so quick to want it and why it must be the utter last resort. In that way I am happy that I watched it and its firmly etched in my mind and psyche.

But these are just two of the movies from the Hayao Miyazaki world. Tell me when you watch Totoro, I will suggest you another one after that!
