China Claims Title of World's Largest Skyscraper Producer for Ninth-Consecutive Year

Dive Brief:

• China boasted a record of 84 high-rises completed in 2016 out of the 128 built worldwide, according to a report by the U.S.-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

• Hundreds more skyscrapers are on the horizon for China, with Shenzhen's 1,965-foot Ping An Finance Centre slated to become the country's second tallest if it's finished as planned this year.

• In comparison, the U.S. saw only seven skyscrapers in that size range — 656 feet tall or taller on CTBUH's list — completed last year, according to The Wall Street Journal.

As per latest Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2016 report:

• China builds more skyscrapers than any country in the world in 2016, building 84 of the total 128 skyscrapers completed last year
• That's more than double the next 10 countries combined, or far more than rest-of-the-world combined
• The 84 new skyscrapers is a new national record for China, as it shattered its own previous world record of 68 skyscrapers built in 2015.
• This is the 9th year in a row that China has led the world in skyscraper-building.
• China also built the tallest two skyscrapers of 2016. In fact, China built 14 of the top 20 tallest buildings completed last year. The Guangzhou CTF Finance Center came in first place as 2016's tallest completed skyscraper at 530 meters tall. The building boasts an impressive 111 floors, and the fastest elevator in the world. The second-highest building completed last year is north China's Eton Place Dalian Tower 1, standing at 383 meters tall, it is located in Dalian city, Liaoning province.
• By now, out of all 1,171 skycrapers (200m+ completed) in the world, 505 or over 43% of which are in China. Hundreds more on the horizon.
  
• United States came in second with 7 skyscrapers completed, South Korea placed third, building 6 skyscrapers.

By city:

• Shenzhen had the highest number of 200m+ completions in 2016 with 11 (more than any country other than China iiself). The total height of buildings completed in Shenzhen is 2,608 meters.
• China’s Chongqing and Guangzhou, and Goyang of South Korea tied for 2nd place with 6 each.
• China’s Chengdu and Dalian, Jakarta of Indonesia and New York of US tied for 3rd place with 5 each.

There are many tall buildings in Saudi Arabia. It is just that they do it at their own pace.
To be fair to SA, I am not aware of any other country that can do it "China scale and China speed."

well not much being completed last year, as most developer in my country prefer to build 80 to 100 meter buildings as it was much cheaper and not need much dificulties in technique building. Kudos to China btw

Jakarta still retain the top spot for ASEAN region btw for almost 10 years in building high rise and skyscrapper.

For 2016, 84 in china with a total height of 20,081 meters. next rank is USA with 7 for a total of 1,650 meters.

This is a big difference but China is still developing but US is developed, hence less to build.
This could be a reason while the other reason is money, or lack of it.

Jakarta has 5 skyscrapers built last year. It would be the top in ASEAN. Well done!

Yes, not surprising that Asia has the biggest share, it has many developing countries.

Say, in another 10 to 20 years, we will see that Africa will start to have a share too.

But China has to adopt a new marketing policy to highlight it's advancement in skycrappers gulf countries who are. Now where close as China get famous bybadvertising

Good idea, there are such projects but not skyscraper tall. Example is"J57 Mini Sky City", built by Broad Sustainable Building Co. Ltd., a prefab construction firm from Broad Group in Changsha, provides factory-made sustainable buildings featuring 90% pre-fabrication, 5 times more energy efficiency, 100 times cleaner air as well as no collapse in 9- magnitude earthquake.

Yes you're right. Like e-commerce driven by Alibaba, ICT driven by Huawei, real estates also driven by corporations, but most of them used to focus on domestic markets only, less overseas. But the trend is changing, Chinese developers are increasingly going overseas, more marketing will follow.

actually we got it bad, because in 2015 we managed to get the second place with 11 buildings completed. Hope this year many developer able to complete their projects on time.

(CNN) China is raising the stakes in the race for the 'tallest' man-made structures: six of the 10 tallest buildings predicted to top out in 2017 are in this booming corner of the world.

And all are set to exceed the 400-meter mark -- shoulders above 2016's additions.

According to The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, a building is structurally "topped-off" when it is under construction, and "the highest primary structural element is in place." Wuhan Greenland Center (above), will become China's tallest building when it tops out next year

Don't be surprised to see a few familiar faces among the jaw-dropping supertalls that are redefining our cities' skylines.

Shanghai Tower – Standing at 2,074 feet (632 meters) tall, the Shanghai Tower is the world's second tallest building

The Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE – Currently world's tallest building, since it was completed in 2010, is the Burj Khalifa. It stands a massive 198 meters (650 feet) above its nearest competitor.

Sky Mile Tower, Tokyo, Japan – In Feburary, a proposal for a mile-high tower in Tokyo was revealed.

Taipei 101, Taipei, Taiwan – The first skyscraper to break the half-kilometer mark, the world's tallest building between March 2004 and March 2010 is also one of the greenest -- certified LEED platinum in 2011. Designed to withstand the elements, including typhoons, earthquakes and 216 km/h winds, Taipei 101 utilizes a 660-tonne mass damper ball suspended from the 92nd floor, which sways to offset the movement of the building.

One Vanderbilt Avenue, New York – A new tall tower has broken ground in New York City. Named the One Vanderbilt Avenue tower, the building is designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox architects, and construction officially started today. At 1,401 feet tall, upon completion it will be the second tallest building in New York after the One World Trade Center
