Buddhists are less than 1% in India..

& Buddhism is not famous in India, but Lord Buddha is. Buddhism & Hinduism belong to the same Dharmic Family of Religions. Lord Buddha himself is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who came down on Earth to help humanity..

Due to which most Hindus in India revere & worship Lord Buddha. Buddha Purnima is also observed by Most Hindus & is a National Holiday.

But yes, in one state in India(Maharashtra), 2/3rd of the Dalits(low caste) have converted to Buddhism, but this feature is generally limited to that state only. Almost 98%+ Dalits in the Rest of the Nation are Hindu(The remaining <2% are Buddhists/jains/Sikhs)

Not just Buddhism these invaders done similar damage to Hinduism n Jainism especially in northern India.....Lord Buddha never proclaimed he is inventing a true religion n same was the lord Mahaveer Jain ..... Buddha to Mahavir to Nanak all are revered figure in our society....
