‘Buddhist heritage circuit’ in India to get max attention

The tourism ministry Thursday launched a comprehensive plan with the World Bank for the development of Buddhist heritage circuits in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar that is estimated to create 10,000 jobs and indirect employments.

Tourism and Culture Minister Shripad Yesso Naik with the tourism ministers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and other officials launched the strategy document Investing in the Buddhist Circuit here.

This comes immediately after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his maiden budget allocated Rs.500 crore for development of five tourist circuits, the Buddhist circuit being one of them.

The total cost of the project will be Rs.4.5 crore, of which the International Finance Corporation (IFC), an arm of the World Bank, will contribute 40 percent of the amount (Rs.1.8 crore).

The tourism ministry will contribute 50 percent of the total amount (Rs.2.25 crore), and the two state governments will offer five percent each (Rs.22.50 lakh each).

“This is a proud moment for us. We will take at least two months to put everything in place and start working on the development of the circuit,” said Naik.

According to Onno Ruhl, World Bank’s country director for India, they chose to work on this project because it would provide jobs in those states that are in dire need of finding better ways of employing their people.

“We as an organisation fight poverty, but to get people out of poverty, people need jobs. If I compare India with other countries, it has potential but that is not matching to what the world is offering,” said Ruhl.

“Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are very important because people have less income and a project like this can create jobs,” he added.

He elaborated on how the focus would be on creating better roads, hotels and improving basic amenities for the pilgrims and tourists.

“There will be many direct and indirect employments. Local communities will be involved and we estimate creation of around 10,000 jobs,” said an IFC official.

Bodhgaya, Nalanda, Rajgir, Vaishali (Bihar), Sarnath, Kushinagar, and Kaushambi (Uttar Pradesh) have been identified among other sites to be developed in the first phase.

These iconic routes and sites are places where the Buddha spent his time, grew up and delivered his first sermon.

it is good that india has realized the need to protect buddhist sites and do excavations. Good job on that!
Between it will be good if india and its people respect the person who protected these sites from vandalisers and fight for the places who is a Sri Lankan called Dharmapala.

during that time Bodhgaya was under a hindu priest and buddhists did not have any right there. It was Dharmapala who fought for the place in courts and secured the place for buddhists highlighting its importance.

Later in his life he became a buddhist monk in india and died there.

This has more to do with ego than anything related to faith. But you're right.

I am glad that there will be a lot of attention paid to the Buddhist circuit. But similar importance has to be given to all ancient sites.

Creating a roadmap network of ancient site visits, such that a person flying from New York, London, Tokyo, Paris or Moscow can get just one ticket to say, Varanasi, Hampi, Bodh Gaya, Tawang, Keylong, Spiti, Golden temple etc. By one ticket I mean creating an integration process so smooth that the tourist can simply show his single ticket from the airline and hop onto the tourism bus or train and continue his journey even where flights are not there.

It will be an uphill battle but worth it.

I was on this tour with my then-gf-now-wife to Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya after that; the way to reach these places there was miserable.

Dirty streets, unruly people, pickpockets all around, rude and pushy guides pressing you for money and hauling themselves on you, smelly by-lanes, shoddy roads, aggressive and mannerless policefolk especially in UP.

All Dharmic religious sites are in pitiful condition. I was watching a few videos of Brindavan. The whole damn place is a big slum.

Its a pity that most of the Dharmic holy sites are located there.

There should be immaculate expressways connecting Delhi to these Holy cities. I believe Agra Lucknow is going to be awarded this year. Delhi-Agra already exists. Now from Lucknow expressway should be made to all the holy towns for ease of pilgrims.
