BSNL to increase minimum broadband speed to 2 Mbps

Looong overdue.

I dont know what happened to bsnl, they actually used to be good at one point, but from 2006ish they started becoming garbage, and went from a profit making org, to a loss making one.
No plan changes,no speed increases , they currently have the worst plans in the region, for the most expensive prices. I sometimes see ads for new plans, but when you call them they completely deny that these plans even exist (when they actually pick up the phone).

Every other company either had a ping problem (my bsnl ping was actually good ), or did not have cables here in my area, so I had to put up with it finally found another isp a few months ago.

Just look at the difference in plans(currently using the 60mbps plan):

 This is like being totally ignorant of the competition.

Conspiracy theory: Private companies are paying the govt to make bsnl junk and take over the business.

BSNL currently offers a minimum speed of 512 Kbps and the move is part of its efforts for revival

Gurgaon: State-run BSNL will offer a minimum broadband speed of 2 mega bit per second (Mbps) from 1 October onwards to its customers, at no extra cost.

The company currently offers a minimum speed of 512 Kbps and the move is part of its efforts for revival. BSNL is loosing customers in mobile as well as landline to private operators. The company lost about 1.78 crore wireless and over 20 lakh wireline subscribers between March 2014 and March 2015.

The losses for the firm stood at Rs.7,600 crore. Given the hyper competition in the marker, BSNL’s announcement may also let private operators to offer higher speed at lower cost. Sectoral regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is also expected to soon redefine the definition of broadband speed, which is currently 512 kbps.

Launching the scheme here, telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that BSNL should have frequent interface with customers and the efforts taken on Monday by increasing the internet definition should help in digital India initiative, which is more for poor.

“We have increased the internet speed four times ...we have ensured 2 Mbps is available at last mile, which is the customer premises starting 1 October,” BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava said.

Srivastava added that BSNL is on a revival path and the company has added about 15 lakh mobile customers in last few months as against 7-8 lakh subscribers per month.

People show their Aadhaar cards in Chennai. Aadhaar numbers will have to linked with mobile phones as per orders of the Supreme Court passed in February 2017.(PTI file photo / Representational)

http://www.hindustantimes.com/india...bruary-2018/story-tzrypnROQL7iR635ATwyYJ.html

The government is moving ahead with linking Aadhaar with mobile SIM cards and all unlinked phones will be deactivated after February 2018, said sources.

The sources said Aadhaar mobile linkage was being done as per orders of the Supreme Court passed in February this year in the Lokniti Foundation case.

All SIM cards have to be verified with Aadhaar within a year from the date of judgement, with all unlinked phones to be deactivated after February next year, so criminals, fraudsters and terrorists cannot use the issued SIMs.

The sources said biometrics cannot be stored by the mobile operators nor they have access to any of the other personal data.

They said biometrics collected should be encrypted by the telecom company and sent to UIDAI at that moment itself and any storage of biometric by a service provider is a criminal offence punishable with up to three years of imprisonment under the Aadhaar Act 2016.

The government had told the Supreme Court in February that it would put in place, within a year, an effective mechanism for the verification of prepaid mobile users who constitute 90% of the total subscribers.

Asking the government to put in place the mechanism for the verification of existing prepaid mobile connection holders “as early as possible”, the court disposed of the petition by Lokniti Foundation seeking the scrutiny of the subscribers so that those having prepaid mobile connections on fake identities are weeded out.

Cabinet approves hiving off mobile tower assets of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited into a separate company, fully owned by BSNL

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for hiving off mobile tower assets of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) into a separate company, fully owned by BSNL.

This approval authorizes BSNL to monetize its telecom tower infrastructure with the formation of a separate subsidiary company.

There are around 4,42,000 mobile towers in the country out of which more than 66,000 mobile tower are of BSNL. An independent, dedicated tower company of BSNL with a focused approach will lead to increasing of external tenancies and consequentially higher revenue for the new company.

Background:

The telecom tower industry has emerged as an independent business to harness the potential for sharing of infrastructure. The business model arose from the need to achieve economies of scale and to reduce capital investment costs for providing mobile services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) policy allows sharing of passive infrastructure i.e. the tower structure, Diesel Generator sets, battery units, power interface unit, air-conditioning etc., which has facilitated the growth of the telecom infrastructure industry. A tower infrastructure company essentially owns the passive infrastructure asset and leases it to telecom service providers enabling them to minimize duplication of investments and economize on costs of Operation and Maintenance (O&M), thereby improving profitability.

Besides the captive model in BSNL and MTNL where the service provider owns their passive infrastructure also, there are three different business models within the telecom tower industry:- companies created by hiving off the tower assets portfolios of service providers into subsidiaries, companies established as independent joint venture entities by service providers jointly and companies promoted by specific service providers but established as independent entities with the promoter being the anchor tenant for the tower company.

Ministry of Communications

India Mobile Congress-Country’s largest platform connecting Mobile, Internet and Technology gets underway.

Telecom Industry expected to generate 4 Million jobs in India-Manoj Sinha

The Minister of Communications Shri Manoj Sinha said that India is currently the second largest telecommunication market in the world with over 1.2 billion subscriber base and approximately 450 million internet users. Delivering the inaugural speech at the India Mobile Congress-2017 here, the Minister said that driven by the adoption of smartphones and exponential increase in data consumption, telecom industry is expected to generate revenue of approximately up to USD 38.25 billion by 2017, registering a CAGR of 5.2% during the period 2014 to 2017. He said that investment into the sector has increased by approximately 220% in last four years and to enhance and expand mobile coverage, operators have rolled out more than 0.2 million sites in the last 15 months and every 3 minutes a new site is being put up.

Shri Sinha said that it is also expected that the telecom industry generates approximately 4 million direct and in-direct job opportunities on account of continued focus of government and telcos in the rural market and continued surge in the sale of mobile phones and data usage. Traffic from mobile devices contributes to 70% of overall e-commerce traffic. Indian e-commerce market is expected to grow 2.8 times by 2021 to USD 125 billion and mobile devices will drive this growth.

He said, fundamental to the goals of digital India is the country’s communications industry that has not just connected people, but also created jobs, become a tool for knowledge, contributed to the exchequer and the economic growth and amplified financial inclusion. There are three key visions areas of the Government’s Digital India plan –

· digital infrastructure as a utility to every citizen,

· governance & services on demand and

· digital empowerment of citizens.

The Minister said that in the past few years, the Government has put the spotlight firmly on technology, smart cities, connected super highways, and enhanced e-governance services delivery for the citizens. All of these are highly dependent on the telecom sector. He said, with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), it will not only be people connecting to the internet but also billions of machines and appliances such as wearables, cars, homes, industrial equipment, white goods, etc. Introduction of low cost smartphones coupled with government initiatives focussed on ‘Digital India’, rise of convergence, and exponential growth in adoption of latest technologies will play a critical role in connecting the next billion to the internet.

The Minister said that the Telecom and IT presently contribute 16.5 percent to the GDP, and there are immense possibilities for increasing its share even as other sector also show robust growth. It is expected that with NTP 2018, Indian telecom market will cross the Rs 6.6 trillion revenue mark even by the year 2020 itself. The Government is undertaking many significant steps for further augmentation of ease of doing business and creating an environment for innovation and investment.

Shri Sinha said that India is at the cusp of a next generation of wireless technology 5G. 5G has been conceived as a foundation for expanding the potential of the Networked Society. A digital transformation brought about through the power of connectivity is taking place in almost every industry. The landscape is expanding to include massive scale of “smart things” to be interconnected. Therefore, the manner in which future networks will cope with massively varied demands and a business landscape will be significantly different from today.

Shri Sinha said, for India, 5G provides an opportunity for industry to reach out to global markets, and consumers to gain with the economies of scale and citizens to reap the benefits of doorstep governance and availability of services, medical support, benefits transfers, education, entertainment and build a digital payment, knowledge and services economy. He said, India has constituted High Level 5G India 2020 Forum and joined the race in 5G technologies and it is open for collaboration with all stakeholders.

In her address, Secretary, Telecom, Ms Aruna Sundararajan said that India Mobile Congress promises to be the platform for Prime Minister’s vision of a fully connected and digitally empowered India, which is well on its way of realisation. She said that there was seven-fold acceleration in the implementation of Bharat-Net Project for connecting one lakh Gram Panchayats with broadband by the end of the year. Similarly, there is a target of 1 million wi-fi hotspots by 2019 and 700 million internet users in India by 2022. She said that IMC is a marquee event to showcase India’s deep capabilities in IT, Telecom and Internet sectors. The Secretary said that three specific goals of the event are-How India can position itself as a world leader in emerging technologies; unprecedented opportunities for Make in India and Design in India and thirdly, the opportunity to grow together in a global environment of convergence. She said that the theme of the event-“Connecting the Unconnected” has a deep resonance for the government.

Poor quality. They need a structural change and make more optical fiber connections from these single core lines.

As part of the deal, Tata's mobile customers in 19 service areas will move to Bharti Airtel along with airwaves that Tata had purchased.
Bharti Airtel Ltd. is acquiring Tata's consumer mobile business that will give the former a major subscriber base boost virtually for free and stem the bleeding for the latter from what is a loss-making venture.

The transaction will be done on a “debt-free cash-free" basis, the companies said in a joint statement, although Bharti Airtel will take over a “small portion” of Tata's unpaid spectrum liabilities.

Tata Teleservices and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd. have more than 40 million subscribers and rank ninth in India's telecom market, which had a total of 1.2 billion mobile subscriptions at the end of July.

As part of the deal, Tata's mobile customers in 19 service areas will move to Bharti Airtel along with airwaves that Tata had purchased.

“Tata and Bharti Airtel will work together to further explore other mutual areas of cooperation,” the companies said.

The statement also said the firm was in the initial stages of exploring a combination of its enterprise business with Tata Communications Ltd. and its retail fixed-line and broadband business with satellite TV arm Tata Sky.

Tata would retain its stake in tower company Viom, and take care of the liabilities associated with it, the statement said.

Goldman Sachs advised Tatas on the deal.
