Kurigram, Jan 7 (bdnews24.com) — Indian border forces have shot dead a teenaged girl tangled in barbed wire along the Kurigram border. The Indians then took away the girl's body.

'Felani', 15, was shot dead by the Chowdhuryhaat camp Border Security Force at Anantapur around 6:30am on Friday, BDR's Phulbari company commander Nayek Subeder Abdul Jabbar told reporters.

Patrols in the area have been strengthened since the incident, he added.

He also said a letter, asking the Indian forces to return the body, has been dispatched.

Quoting locals, Phulbari police chief Monayem Sarker said Felani's father Nurul Islam Nuru, hailed from Banarbhita village of Nageshwari and worked in Delhi.

Felani had been returning to Bangladesh with her father as her marriage had been settled with a local boy, said Sarker.

Nuru, however, managed to cross the barbed wire with a ladder, he said.

Felani started screaming when her clothes got entangled in the wire, "Hearing her scream, the BSF members shot her and took away the body," said Sarker.

According to human rights organisation Odhikar, BSF kills one Bangladeshi every four days. The organisation has also claimed that in 2010, 74 Bangladeshis were killed, 72 injured and 43 were abducted.

New York-based human rights group Human Rights Watch, in its new report published on Dec 9, said the Indian government should prosecute BSF soldiers responsible for serious human rights abuses like indiscriminate use of force, arbitrary detention, torture, and killings.

do you think BSF guys have 3 rd eye to find out one who is crossing a International Border illegaly is a terrorist or a normal person. that too when INDIA is going through many terrorist attacks???
do you think BSF guys should go near such suspicous people doing illegal things and first check if they are armed or not and shoot only after they get attacked???
if this people are so innocent why they try crossing border illegally when there are legal ways to do so.??

There is some serious question on the authenticity of the news and the thread starter is no saint either however Let's assume for a second that the news is correct...With that context I would to ask members is BSF wrong in shooting down the teenager??? What are the rules of the engagement for border security forces??? Are they supposed to shoot the person illegally crossing at sight or supposed to catch them??? I highly doubt the catching part because for that the person stationed at the bunker will either have to leave his bunker and run after the person crossing the wires or inform his counterparts to catch him/her later....

Can someone please shed some light on how actually such scenarios are handled????

Actually this raises a lot of questions. The article makes the claim that Bangladeshi nationals are illegally present in India, something that most of the BD members here refute & she was supposed to be shot when she was trying to cross over into BD from India. If they are now asking for the body, are they admitting the presence of BD nationals within India illegally & since she was supposedly shot on the Indian side, on what grounds can the BD authorities claim her?

1. Its a tragic incident but who are responsible for it ????????

a.) The girl and his father.

b.) Govt. of Bangladesh who don't check their citizens and they illegally migrate to India.

c.) Poverty in Bangladesh that poor people cross over to India for job.


2.) Its strange that people say India have lots of poor people. These types of illegal Bangladeshi people are snatching the food from the mouth of Indian people and also stealing their jobs.

When there will be 20 millions of illegal Bangladesh live, earn and take money back to Bangladesh they are not only committing crime and violating national/international laws but also snatching the livelihood of poor Indians.

i am pretty sure there are laws of engagement that tell you to engage when you see a possible threat.A 15 year old GIRL in ripped clothes and stuck in barbed wires doesnt seem like a potential threat.

That is what i am trying to ask...what are the rules of engagement...Anyone who is trying to pass the barbed wire is supposed to be shot down or one is supposed to run after him/her to catch??? B/W i am not trying to be insensitive here but not sure how do we expect BSF to know the age of the person?? Are we saying that BSF saw the gal runnning towards the barbed wire, waited for her to get tangled and then shot her down???

Anyways we all know that when it comes to security forces they strictly have to follow rules of engagement..so that's why i am trying to ask some informed members what are those rules of engagement???

Though i am not that well informed but the common rule of engagement remains that engage when engaged or you see a possible threat.
