New Delhi, Dec 2 (IANS) “Do what you like, but don’t get caught.” This was then prime minister Indira Gandhi’s laconic fiat authorizing the Border Security Force (BSF) to take on Pakistani troops several months before the India-Bangladesh war actually erupted on Dec 3, 1971 - exactly 38 years ago.
So says K.F. Rustamji, a legendary police officer who founded the BSF in 1965 and who was its head when civil war erupted in the then East Pakistan leading to its secession and its birth as independent Bangladesh.

In a highly readable book, “The British, The Bandits and The Bordermen” (Wisdom Tree), Rustamji reveals that the Indian Army chief issued orders March 29, 1971, providing limited assistance to Bengali guerrillas pitted against Pakistani troops. After quoting what Indira Gandhi told him, Rustamji says: “Nothing more was spelt out as nothing could be foreseen of the rapid developments that would follow. The direction gave me the liberty to take steps which ultimately produced results.

“Thus the BSF entered the scene in the midst of a surcharged atmosphere and rising expectations. The Force consisted of a few officers and about 100 men well versed in commando raids, demolition, etc.

“The Force was organised to carry out tasks in support of the freedom struggle by the people of East Pakistan. The aim was to provide aid to the freedom fighters to carry out their assignment successfully.”

It was not long before the BSF made contact with the most senior leaders of the Awami League party who had survived the massacres of the Pakistani forces - Tajuddin Ahmad and Amirul Islam. When BSF’s Golok Majumdar met them for the first time, they “were barefooted, haggard and disheveled and were wearing a lungi and a singlet. They had walked across from Dacca (Dhaka)”.

According to the book, edited by P.V. Rajgopal, the BSF played a key role in the formation of the Bangladesh provisional government, in framing its constitution and in selecting a national flag and national anthem. The BSF also contributed to the defection of Pakistan’s Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata - the first instance of its kind as Bengali officers in the diplomatic service gave up their allegiance to Islamabad.

“According to the plan, all over the (India-Bangladesh) border, the BSF and Mukti Bahini established a compact which made history. What impressed me was the identity of interest.”

Rustmaji says Indira Gandhi wanted the Indian Army to go into action in East Pakistan in May 1971 but the army chief, General ‘Sam’ Mankeshaw, refused to oblige.

“The chief was clear in his mind that he would go into battle only when he was sure of victory and was also confident of having enough men and material on the Sino-Indian border to guard against a thrust from that side.”

The book says that even after the army got involved in Bangladesh, it leaned on the BSF for coordination with Mukti Bahini and local knowledge.

“The BSF boys started assisting the Mukti Fauj (later Bahini) in causing subversion and sabotage deep inside East Pakistan and even in district headquarter towns, where cash and weapons were looted and made over to the government of Bangladesh.”

The book says that at the height of the unrest in East Pakistan, the Soviet and American intelligence agencies tried to infiltrate the ranks of the freedom fighters.

“The US intelligence agency men were in regular touch with some Awami League leaders and more so with Khondakar Mushtaq Ahmed.”

In September 1971, Indira Gandhi said she might give the green signal for the Indian military thrust into East Pakistan in the third week of November. The war broke out on Dec 3, 1971, leading within a fortnight to the mass surrender of Pakistani troops and the birth of Bangladesh as an independent nation.

Full of crap made this good article another junk.

Flag was selected and hoisted by Dhaka university students long before 25th march. National anthem also sang before 25th of March when India had no clue about Bangladesh development. No constitution was framed before 1972. Not only Kolkata defected but all diplomats all across the world defected for the cause of Bangladesh.

The news comes from India so what did you expect?

That is just more crap. Everything was influenced and often instigated by India. While some of the decisions were initiated by the Bangladeshis these had to be approved by India and were often changed. The flag and constitution are just two examples.

Everybody knows about BSF role. So, it is not needed to discover everything anew. But, I thought that it was Bhutto and Yahya who created Bangladesh by intention. Was it not logical for these two to agree to giving State power to the peoples' representative in 1971? Was it not appropriate for Yahya Khan to convene the National Assembly on March 25, 1971? They refused to do so. So, are they not responsible for the separation? But, you are coming with a BSF patting theory.

These west Pakistani leaders pushed us too much that forced us to raise against the regime that denied our rights as citizens of Pakistan. I must tell you one thing. West Pakistani people also thought themselves racially superior than us, so they had the right to rule over us. I have seen your photograph and I must tell you that because of your kind of face they thought we are inferior to them.

It is surely a fact that the people of north, west and north-west of South Asia are better-looking, taller and fairer skinned than the people in the east or south. It is a shame that a person like you, whose face would be despised in an united Pakistan, go against the creation of BD, and come with many anti-BD theories to get hold over a few pennies. It is a selling out effort unworthy of a true citizen, and no less than Mir Zafar himself.

A free Bangladesh has given people with your types of faces to prove that merit is more important. We are meritorious than the people who inhabit in the west and we are much braver than them. But, it saddens me to see that some people, specially those, who look more like NAMASUDRA in BD, are against the creation of Bangladesh even after 37 years. It is time that the ugly looking people of an independent BD stop Pakistan loving and, instead, do positive things that unite the people of our great nation.

Why you should come with so many theories that do not go deep into the crisis that had beset our two wings? You talk only what India did or did not. Someday, I expect you to come with a new proposition that instead of Sheikh Mujib, we should declare your Indian BSF to be our Father of Nation.

I would like to believe that Zulfiqur Ali Bhutto and Yahya Khan should be regarded as the joint Fathers of Nation of Bangladesh instead of Sheikh Mujib alone. Because the position these two gentlemen took after the general election, initiated the army atrocities and then the Bangali resistance and finally a separation. Can you do some research on it and give us a new theory? But, do not forget to write about the role of our JUTE in the economy and politics of the then Pakistan.

Our jute had built infrastructure in the west. But, when the west Pakistani leaders found out in the late '60s that jute was going to be outdated because of the introduction of SYNTHETIC FIBERS, they kicked us, shoved us, deprived us, then started killing us. And when you write, do not forget to mention the despise that our ugly Bangali faces created in the minds of tall and handsome west Pakistanis.

BD was created by the will of the ppl of BD assisted in no small measure by various agencies - the IA being the last among them.

Nobody would say India did not help us in getting our own country, but an opinion that says it was all BSF that created BD must be contested. It was our war from the beginning to the end. It was our sacrifice of lakhs of souls that created BD.

This Munshi like fellows are always there to discredit our war of independence by joining RAW, BSF and others of India with this war in such words as if there was no political movements by the population, no war by the Muktis, and there was no blood sheddings These hypocrites must be stopped from making biased opinion.

These hypocrites are always trying to derail even our economic developments only because an economically failed BD helps them to say that Pakistan time was better. They have such a slave mentality. They should be stopped from backstabbing our country.

There are tens of writers on a political subject. But, Munshi like people eagerly bring out specific writings to prove their own points that it was India that single handedly created BD, and therefore, it should cease to exist. What a bias? To read the minds of these hypocrats, you should read between the lines they write.

Your comments are superficial and ignorant and reveal your Indian sympathies. I see through your pretense of being a patriotic Bangladeshi. You are nothing of the sort but merely a fifth columnist posing as a proud Bangladeshi.

I wanted to know thought of Bangladeshi friends on Mukhti Bahani, I had not clue about it before I joined PDF. I have been told by my Pakistani friends that it was a terrorist organization created by India? Is it true? How much credit of creation on Bangladesh goes to them.
