Jammu: A Border Security Force (BSF) officer was killed on Tuesday as Pakistani troops violated ceasefire by resorting to firing on forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The firing from across the border in Tarkundi area of Mendhar sector was "unprovoked", they said.

Indian troops retaliated effectively to silence the Pakistani guns, the officials said.

We often read this standard statement in news reports along with the famous term "befitting response".
What does "silenced" mean?
Does it mean any of the following :
1. The enemy artillery position was accurately located by fire finder radar and destroyed by counter battery fire.
2. The enemy artillery position was
approximately guessed by trajectory estimates, and counter battery fire probably killed or wounded the gun crew resulting in a cessation of firing .

3. The enemy artillery position was targeted by observer assisted ranging shots that caused the gun crew to start relocating the guns causing a cessation of artillery fire .

Pictures taken by Satellite , drones with side mounted cameras or pictures taken by high flying reconnaissance aircraft can easily photograph the damage to an artillery position or border post. Armed forces of countries the world over photograph artillery strikes ( recent conflict in Azerbaijan are an example) that clearly show the damage inflicted. Even 100 years back during World War 1 , observers in static balloons using primitive plate cameras got some remarkably clear pictures of battery fire damage. Subsequent wars World War 2, Korean War, Arab Israeli wars, Vietnam, the recent Syrian Civil war all show photographic evidence ( still pictures and cine or video footage) of artillery strikes and the damage inflicted. Even the India Pakistan conflict of 1965 has very clear video footage taken by both sides of artillery strikes. There were limited disclosures of artillery strikes in the 1971 India Pakistan conflict also.
But since 1971 the description of the activity is limited to the term
"befitting reply" and "silenced the guns"
If the reply is so "befitting " and the guns silenced then why is there a resumption of artillery fire from that very location a few days later? Does the enemy have an infinite supply of artillery pieces that are brought in to replace the ones "silenced " ?

This particular incident was through alleged sniper fire, so doubt the guns being "silenced" was as a result of BSF retaliatory fire rather the sniper having done his job, moved out.

So it is not known if the sniper was located and killed and it is more likely he had moved from his original position, which is a classic "shoot and scoot" tactics.
Which again shows the unwillingness or incompetence ( apparently a mix of both ) of the enemy to hunt down snipers.

In the Battle of Stalingrad Soviet Red Army snipers and their German Wehrmacht counterparts fought a "no holds" barred fight. The media on each side unashamedly named and identified rival snipers in this deadly game, flaunting their scores and looking forward to the duels with their counterparts. There were many sniper duels far more intense and deadly than the factual events immortalized the movie " Enemy at the Gates" when Vasily Zaytsev killed Major Edward Konig.

Snipers still duel today with far more deadly weapons ( Barrett and Dragunov SVD sniper rifles) . All professional armies, insurgents, resistance groups have snipers and in conflicts around the world there are fighting men who are felled to sniper shots. Example : US special forces have taken out rival snipers while loosing some of their own to resistance fighters in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But there is a difference in the way the claims are made by the media and the way it is reported.
No where does the USA claim a " befitting reply " or " silenced the guns". They identify the rival sniper and show the body or rebroadcast an acknowledgement by the enemy of the loss (Example: Death of Al Zarqawi in Iraq).
No vague, chest thumping claims are made. Even the Soviet Union with its controlled media never made bombastic claims such as we see in the India Pakistan scenario.

Stereotypes are misleading.
Kumaoni, Dogras, Garhwalis are Hindus and they constitute a significant portion of India's fighting manpower and they are light complexioned often with light eyes as well.
Indians come in all shapes and colors. Yes, a majority nowadays are from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes ( commonly known as "Dalits") and also from OBC ( other backward castes) so they are dark skinned.

On the word "Black faced" :
"Black faced" doesn't necessarily mean poor fighting abilities.
Hazrat Bilal ( R.A.) was of Nubian origin and Sudani fighters under Mahdi courageously fought against British colonial imperialists . They were dubbed by the British in derogatory terms as "Fuzzy Wuzzies" on account of their African Hair Style. The Indian sub-continent has had a long tradition of fighting manpower of Muslim African origin termed as "Siddis" in the state of Gujarat and Kerala ( known for their maritime fighting skills ).
Mohammed Ahmed Kunju probably of Somali origin fought the Portuguese colonialist in running naval battles and his statue is installed in the Indian Navy Museum in Delhi. The Chaoosh ( spelling?) in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad were of African ( Sudani) origin and fought valiantly in both World Wars and in defense of the Nizam.
