BSF kills Bangladeshi on Lalmonirhat border

A Bangladeshi cattle trader was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Sree Rampur border in Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat early today.

The deceased was identified as Ershadul Haque, 35, son of Ehasanul Haque from Burimari Islampur village in the upazila, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

Police recovered the body in the wee hours of today and sent it to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Mansur Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patgram Police Station.

Ershadul and some other people went to India for bringing Indian cattle but when they were entering Bangladesh, BSF troops opened fire targeting the cattle traders, the OC said quoting the victim’s family members.

Ershadul came in the line of fire and was hit by a bullet, he said.

He succumbed after entering Bangladesh territory. Police recovered the body with the help of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), he added.

Confirming the incident, Commander of Burimari BGB camp Subedar Nayek Mizanur Rahman said BGB sent a letter to BSF protesting the killing.

Bangladeshis will take risk and bring Indian cows as many Bangladeshis can not do qurbani without Indian cows. Also if Indian cows are not available during Eid lakhs of Bangladeshis will not be able to give qurbani becuse of excessive price hike of deshi goru (Desi cow). In other way Bangladeshis depend on India for Qurbani.

Thousands of cows are being smuggled into Bangladesh from India through border areas of the division, as demand of the animals will see rise for sacrificial purpose during the Eid-ul-Azha.

Indian cattle traders sell cows to Bangladeshi traders at many bordering villages and the cows are being smuggled into the country through managing the border forces of both the countries.

To control the smuggling, legalise the smuggled cows and get customs duty from it, customs, excise and vat office in Sylhet officially declared three new corridors in three districts of the division last year along with the older one in Moulvibazar district but the smuggling sees rise day by day.

“Many of the cows are also bringing in 'foot and mouth disease', locally known as 'khura rog,' which is creating a severe threat to our local farm cows,” said Dr Md Gias Uddin, deputy director of the Department of Livestock in Sylhet.

The situation is also posing threat to local cattle farmers, who target the Eid-ul-Azha as their biggest selling opportunity with high price, he added.


Md Shafiqul Islam, customs, excise and vat commissioner in Sylhet, said the department has permitted corridors at Majhergaon in Sylhet's Companiganj upazila, Balla in Habiganj, Chhatak in Sunamganj and Sharifpur in Moulvibazar.

“We are taking Tk 500 as duty for each smuggled cow at these corridors to legalise the smuggled cows, although the control of smuggling is under the purview of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) who are in-charge of the security and preventing smuggling through the border areas,” the commissioner said.

During a recent visit to bordering Bichhanakandi area in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet, this correspondent found that hundreds of cows are being smuggled from India through hills and water bodies and then carried to different farms in Sylhet.

Bishwajit Kumar Paul, upazila nirbahi officer of Gowainghat, said these cows were not supposed to cross the border in the upazila as the district's only corridor is at Compainganj upazila.

“After BGB seizes these cows at the border, they take the duty with a receipt in the name of nearest corridor and let these cows enter, although we do not know whether all these cows are being marked and legalised,” the UNO said.

Meanwhile, to prevent incoming diseased cows, Department of Livestock in Sylhet has set up four quarantine stations at Bitoli of Juri upazila in Moulvibazar, Tamabil in Gowainghat, Zakiganj and Sutarkandi of Beanibazar in Sylhet but due to manpower shortage these quarantine stations are not functional yet.

Dr Gias Uddin, deputy director of the Department of Livestock, said, “We built these infrastructures as primary station to check whether the imported cows have any disease. Most cow diseases like 'foot and mouth disease' are quick spreading and when an affected cow is kept with a flock, all of the cows are at risk of being affected.”

According to the department, more than five lakh cows are sacrificed during the Eid-ul-Azha in the division every year. Local seasonal cattle farmers raise more than three lakh cows and another three lakh cows enter the market from household rearers.

Deshi Goru (Desi Gai) are incredible. Bangladeshis call desi cows to those cows brought up in Bengal and Assam.

The incidents of border killings will come down to zero if cattle smuggling through the Bangladesh-India border ends, Border Guard (BGB) Director General (DG) Maj Gen Md Shafeenul Islam has said.

“Cattle smuggling is the main reason behind border killings, and it should be stopped (to) bring down border killings,” the BGB DG said at a press briefing on Sunday, held at the Battalion Headquarters of BGB 1 in Rajshahi after attending its 224th founding anniversary celebration.

The BGB chief said: “We cannot accept the killing of a single Bangladeshi national along the border. Concerted efforts from all quarters, including law enforcement agencies, people residing along the border areas, and public representatives have become crucial to put a stop to the border killings.”

Responding to a question, DG Shafeenul said border surveillance technology is very effective to ensure peace and security through combating border-related crimes, reports BSS.

“We have identified around 350km of border with India and Myanmar as sensitive and vulnerable,” the BGB chief said. In the first phase, installation work of “border surveillance and response system” along 7-km sensitive area of Patuatuli in Jessore has been completed.

A communication network equipped with thermal camera, video camera, rudder and sensor-connected various instruments was set up there, he told journalists.

Currently, installation work of the system along the 10-km border area of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar is underway, he said. “We are very hopeful about completion of the modern system along the remotest border areas in Cox’s Bazar, Naogaon, Dinajpur and Chapainawabganj districts in the coming years,” he added.

“As we have manpower shortage to manage the large border manually, we are putting more emphasis on the modern system,” he also said.

“We are committed to combating trafficking of drugs, human and children,” the BGB chief asserted while replying to another question.

He, however, said the killings in border areas have been reduced significantly due to the cordial relation between BGB and Indian Border Security Force.

Mexicans cross border illegally. But, in most cases, they are arrested... not killed. BSF can very easily arrest them. Unfortunately, Bangladesh can't touch India, so BSF has a free hand in what they do.

Cow is a holy animal in Hinduism. Hindu Lord Krishna is the protector of cows in Hinduism. They consider beef, a sinful meat. There were times in vedic period of Hinduism when Hindus used to eat beef but they put a ban of beef to respect Hindu Lord Krishna's attachment for cows. That's why they get hurt by cow smuggling by Bangladeshis.
