Pak army chief bro bats for student exchange

ATTARI: Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani's brother and Murree's Lawrence College principal, Air Commodore (R) Farooq H Kayani, has called for teachers, students exchange programmes between India and Pakistan to promote brotherhood and peace. He said the two countries should also launch scholarship programmes for each other's students.

Kayani, who arrived at the Wagah border on Tuesday along with a 20-member delegation from Pakistan, would be the chief guest at Sanawar's Lawrence School foundation day on April 15.

"There should be more exchange programmes of teachers and students between the schools of two nations to forge friendlier ties and dispel misunderstandings," Kayani said.

"Misunderstandings will disappear if a Pakistani student has an Indian teacher and vice versa. These boys and girls will bridge the gap between the two nations."

He said the scholarship programme would enable students to live in each other's countries and help them understand ground realities.

He said the ice between the managements of Indian and Pakistani Lawrence institutes broke in 2004 when he led a delegation to Lawrence school in Lovedale, Ooty. "We developed an understanding after a series of meetings."

A very wise and sensible suggestion from Mr. Farooq Kayani. And as an educationist, he would know the benefits.
Of course the"hawks" and "doubting thomases" and assorted cynics will object to such suggestions. Just as they find fault with "Aman ki Asha".

1. Or its something else, as most of the pakistanis always talk sweet and sensible in India and when in their country came back to usual.

2. And it may be for the public consumption in India as his brother Gen kayani said to be most anti India general in pak army ever as stated by US.

I will not put forward such a cynical response, for the following reasons:
1. Farooq Kayani is not a politician nor part of the political establishment. So there was no compulsion on him to say what he did. He could have just made the usual statements--how happy he is to be India, or-- how nice the hospitality is etc. Which are just reactive by nature and intent. Instead he expressed something proactive in nature.
2. As an educationist, his role is somewhat of an exemplar, maybe not for you or I. But for his students, yes. Therefore, he is likely to carefully consider his words carefully before uttering them.
3. Whatever his brother may be like, I am pretty sure that Farooq Kayani is "his own man". He has had an earlier career in the services and now in education. That cannot have been achieved entirely by "riding on someone's coat-tails"!

Great many indians already teach pakistani students abroad. Especially in the middle east. Even though pakistani schools are advised not to hire indians, they do it anyway. My mother was the head of dept in a pakistani school in dubai before changing to a british school.

.
My mom says these pak schools in middle east recieve a set of directives updated every year. One of them explicitely asks not to hire indians. However, these guys have no choice but to hire indians.

Lol, my mom being the HoD screens the new teachers. You can imagine the reaction of fresh teachers coming out of pakistan looking for a job. ...haha...

Off topic question for Mech:
Do Pakistani kids go to Indian schools? Is it common? Vice versa?

Yeah CBSE curriculum is popular among pakistani students. Most change to pakistani schools after 9th grade ,but those planning to go abroad will usually stick to indian syllabus.

And no, indian students almost never enrolls in a pakistani schools. Our educational system is far superior. Not to mention, if the student plans on returning to india for college, it would be impossible for him/her to gain admission anywhere. In addition, we indians tend to stereotype pakistani schools excessively. If an indian student does enroll in a pakistani school, it would be very peculiar indeed. Not so ,vice versa.

Also, it is compulsory to do islamic studies in pakistani syllabus .....i think and their social studies is really weird man..
