British Colonialism and Partition of Bengal

Which Muslim majority Assam district you are talking about? Is it Sylhet? This district was always a part of Sultanate of Bengal. But, for administrative purpose it was added to Assam by the British Bengal Presidency. In 1947 it was returned to Bengal, that's all.

Bengal/east Pakistan was denied entire Murshidabad, half Nadia, half Dinajpur, half Karimganj, half Jalpaiguri, Goalpara of west Assam and many etc. only to provide a corridor to India to colonize NE. Any way, India won, but now is chewing its fingers for indepence movement throughout the NE.

Have those "independence movements" lead to any tangible results since '47?

People(non Muslims) will prefer death to that.

I know it hurts. Bangladeshis are being thrown out of Assam as we speak. :)

Can you explain why any decent, rationale being would go to India? As per Amarta Sen's point of view, he has repeatedly showed that Bangladesh has been doing better than India in most socioeconomic scales. Okay, so when the Bangladeshis move there, do they automatically get better paid jobs? if we take Indias poverty rate to be 20%, thats still more than 200 million poor people (more than the population of Bangladesh) right there. and given, mostly poverty hit people would go there, wouldn't they just end up in the slums, which according to most studies, Bangladesh has it better. Don't take my words for it, have a look at unbiased facts. If Bangladeshis did move there, at least one of the members here would know bangladeshis who has family there. Most of the people who do move there are because of Hindu origins, who believe they have cultural ties and extended family members, and 2ndly there are illegal cattle traders.

Entire Punjab and part of NWFP was ruled by Sikhs before British conquered it. Don't go into history. Sindh was created out of Bombay Province.

Independence of India Act gave you concession in one more province of Assam while only Bengal and Punjab were to be bifurcated while India got none in Sindh.

See the map Jalapaiguri was Hindu majority. Bada, Debiganj, Pachagar, Patgram and Tetulia of Jalpaiguri , whole of Khulna, Chittagong Hill track went to Pakistan. Muslims were just 55% of Bengal's population, you weren't going to get 90% Bengal for that.

You can have Amartya Sen. Please take him. We will all thank you.

To find the fact it's not necessary to depend on a particular guy, see all HDI indexes, india is currently 4 years behind of BD on life expectancy. Also, don't forget to check open defecation practiced by indian.

We the then Indians fought for 200 years to get independence. So, NE will take a few more years. It will quicken only if BD cooperates with the movement covertly. BD is here to retain the status quo, however, it is not helpful to the NE people or to the Indian economy.

Only BD can support NE economic and development aspirations. Why does not India give that land a limited autonomy to deal directly with BD on trade matters? It will take away their frustration with Delhi.

Half knowledge is always dangerous, specially at the disposal of dimwits.

1. HDI: If you go by the HDI, which Sen helped Mahabub-ul-Haq launch, Bangladesh ranks ten places below India.

2. IMR and Child Mortality Rate: Once you correct for the differences in still births, India actually does better. India has been far more successful in bringing down still births than Bangladesh, which has in turn left its IMR and CMR higher.

3. Life Expectancy: Three points here: (i) Differences if any are tiny; (ii) In part, the lower IMR (which is itself the result of higher still births) contributes to higher life expectancy; and (iii) at independence, Bangladesh began with about five years of lead over India. That a very significant head start, which persists over time. The 1971 war led to a significant drop in life expectancy in Bangladesh but it then returned to the past trend. Such a return also makes it look like Bangladesh made speedier progress than India.

4. Maternal Mortality: On this score (as one one expect from stillbirth rates), Bangladesh does much more poorly than India. One has to wonder why the civil society in Bangladesh whom we instinctively applaud has failed in this hugely critical area.

5. The right comparison is with West Bengal: Because of its sheer size, various parts of India vary big time in history and geography. Hardly any two parts of Bangladesh are likely to exhibit the differences that Uttar Pradesh and Kerala exhibit on this score. So one has to ask what part of India is most comparable to Bangladesh. To my mind, it is perhaps West Bengal. Again, one must recognize that Bangladesh is much poorer than West Bengal. But its health indicators are not superior to those of West Bengal.

@LaBong I once read that even Amartya Sen's ancestral property was occupied using draconian Enemy property act and was one of the main reason behind wiping out Hindus from Bangladesh.

Why @LaBong should come up with an old and outdated statistic of 2009 when our per capita income was only $551. Now it is about double at $1044. Our Finance Minister stated yesterday that this happened basically due to improvement in the social sector.

Everything changed fast in Bangladesh towards improvement since 2009 because the previous civilian BNP govt. had put many positive ingredients in the social sectors that resulted in the gradual improvement of those sectors and consequent rise of GDP.

But, everything went down in India that can be seen by the recent govt action to subsidize rice to 80 crore Indians at only Rs.1, Rs.2, and Rs.3 per kg..

It is a misguided conception that in Bangladesh those things happened. There was an Enemy Property Act. But, the purpose was to take hold of the property right by the govt directly so that individual land grabbers cannot touch those. But, you are talking of a good Act with a vengeance. Even today, the land holder's name remains "Khash," meaning under the govt.

That means it is a land grab. Not just by anybody. But by the (holy cow!) Government!
