Key Points
  • The ST Kinetics Warthog has been retired from British Army service
  • The move is a U-turn on previous plans to keep the vehicle in service
The British Army has retired is ST Kinetics Warthog articulated tracked armoured vehicles from service, IHS Jane's can reveal.

In total, 115 Warthogs (an improved version of the ST Kinetics Bronco) were purchased by the United Kingdom as an urgent operational requirement (UOR) for use in Afghanistan instead of the less-well protected BvS 10 Viking articulated tracked vehicle.

In December 2013 the MoD announced that 100 Warthogs would be brought into the 'core' equipment budget, meaning they would remain in service once UOR funding for operations in Afghanistan ended. Under this plan the Warthogs would be modified and transferred to the Royal Artillery's 32 and 47 Regiments to support unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations.

However, speaking to IHS Jane's on 10 March, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated that this decision had been reversed, with Warthog instead having been retired from service in October 2015.

In a statement the MoD said: "Warthog was delivered in 2010 to replace Viking and was designed specifically for use in Afghanistan. A number of protected mobility vehicles have been brought into core; it was decided that the capability required from Warthog could be delivered by other vehicles, therefore Warthog was withdrawn from service in 2015. The Army has a fleet of other protected mobility platforms still in service delivering this capability."

The MoD were not able to answer questions from IHS Jane's on whether work was indeed undertaken to modify Warthog for post-Afghan use after the 2013 decision to keep them, or if any money was wasted on this effort. The MoD also did not answer questions on exactly what vehicles 32 and 47 regiments would operate instead of the Warthog in the future.

I think the RG35 series is destined to take over.
Similar weight class, more range if a tiny bit less mobility, etc; it fits the bill well enough.

Have a great day Zarvan and all, Tay.

. .
Goody, perhaps I can get one secondhand

Your neighbours will hate you if you do!
Unless you get the model with a blade and clear their entryways and local roads in winter?

:enjoy: Great one, I almost spilled coffee on my screen!
Tay.

Helped one of my friend restoring an old M-48 Patton and make it look like a M-60 tank, I would say unless you have a barn, it's not a good idea to get one of these APC.

Why don't PAK army buys these they seem to be ideal for use in Waristan! I am sure they could get them at a suitable price!

That's quite a bit of work, I would think, considering that M-48 glacis curvature(s). Did you do anything about the return rollers?

Very much agreed but then, nothing scares a couple buddies armed with a blowtorch,
grinders, beer kegs and a deep set intent!
That pic of a water car type / landing craft on stilts, sorry foils, of yours shows as much?
Thanks for it, I had not seen it, BTW!
Kudos to Jhun and friend!

Gd'day both of ya, Tay.

That's indeed a lot of works. And the cosmetic things is just one part of it, he also need to refurbish the gearbox and drive train and have it made in a lathe machine, parts by parts. Cause when he got the tank, the gearbox is in a very bad shape, it barely able to drive. Would have help if he is doing them now with 3-D printing and all lol.

To be honest I did not stick around to finish it, I helped out some bits and pieces (like the light bracket and some welding works, I did not know what ever happened to the return rollers. I can't even remember if they have 5 or 3 on it. But I would reckon it don't be that much of an effort to have to taken out. But I have no idea lol. In fact, it may actually have been a M-47 not M-48, but then again, I have no idea....

Oh well....it's a veteran things, we were doing it so the tank can join a VFW Parade or something. My friend was the head of the local VFW chapter. And one day he saw this junk tank sitting in some disposal yard and decided to rescue it. I think he is now using the tank for TV/Movie Production.

.
decided to rescue it.

LOL, I did as much with houses so I shouldn't talk but ... stray kittens and baby squirrels
might be a more reasonable rescue endeavour for the average folk? ;)

And no matter how enabled you think yourself to be, I'd strongly recommend avoiding ...
rescue attempts on women ( and vice versa for the gals ) or junkies without a strong support group!

And a blowtorch!

And you'll also need to switch from beer to whisky!

OK, rambling thoughts out , Tay. :-)
