This is a really excellent lecture about SHA-256 and how it is used by the Bitcoin protocol, because it’s very technical (instead of using metaphors to describe how Bitcoin works), and someone who isn’t a computer nerd can take most of it in and understand what he’s saying:
SHA-256 is a set of instructions designed and written by the United States National Security Agency (NSA) that tell a computer to follow a series of mathematical steps with any input, in the form of a string of information of any size.
One thing these steps do to an input every time is compress it into an output that is always a 256-bit value called a hash. The other is encrypt it: The mathematical operations in these steps and the values they use as operands cannot be done in reverse to find the input using the hash.
So the hash can be used as a fingerprint for the original data because it is impossible to guess what the output will be for any value before running it through SHA-256––
And the resulting hash appears completely random, but it is the result of a deterministic process that will produce the same hash for the same input every time.
So SHA-256 (secure hashing algorithm 256) is a cryptographic one-way compression function.
If you have the hash you can verify that someone else has the input value by running it through SHA-256 to see if you get the same hash. This specific hashing algorithm is an essential part of how Bitcoin works, as very eloquently explained by Antonopoulos in the lecture above.

The shocking claim from a cybersecurity expert was made public after slides from her presentation in Russia were photographed and shared on social media.
One of Natalya Kaspersky’s slides said: "Bitcoin is a project of American intelligence agencies, which was designed to provide quick funding for US, British and Canadian intelligence activities in different countries.
“The technology is 'privatised,' just like the Internet, GPS and TOR. In fact, it is dollar 2.0. Its rate is controlled by the owners of exchanges.”
The slides were photographed during Ms Kaspersky’s talk at ITMP University in St Petersburg.
In the talk she also claimed that Satoshi Nakamoto, who is credited with creating the currency, was in fact the codename for a collective of US cryptographers.
During the presentation she also shared her theory that your smartphone is not a personal device and is instead used to spy on its owner.
Bitcoin is not going away but it is facing major competition from other cryptocurrencies like Ripple and Monero, Spencer Bogart from Blockchain Capital said.
Speaking to CNBC, he said: “I think now in 2018 we have a lot of people that recognise that bitcoin is not going away.

Considering how much the GCC wants to sideline the Iranians, I’m surprised there flag ship project is not building out the planned GCC railway, and then extending it through Iraq and Syria to the Mediterranean coast of Turkey (especially after the reconciliation of Syria with the rest of the GCC and the goal of bringing Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon out of the Iranian orbit). For Turkey it would be a route outside of Kurdish populated areas, and could decrease the risk of disruption, as well as gaining more investment and trade deals with the GCC.
For the West, it would undermine Russian and Iranian influence in the region.
It wouldn’t take much to get the Indian companies operating in or with links to the GCC to switch to the GCC railway over the Iranian option, and for Pakistan it could make Gwadar viable if the port is linked, via Reko Diq, to Quetta and Central Asia via a rail route. Also circumnavigating Iran.
In a third phase, and extension all the souther Yemeni coast and via a tunnel to Djibouti could link the GCC via Africa, forming the starting point for a Trans-African Raiwlay and the massive potential for GCC investors that could provide. So that in the end, except for the Oman-Gwadar sea leg, Senegal would be linked by rail with Shanghai and the Silk Road would be reborn, under GCC management.

One of Natalya Kaspersky’s slides said: "Bitcoin is a project of American intelligence agencies, which was designed to provide quick funding for US, British and Canadian intelligence activities in different countries.
“The technology is 'privatised,' just like the Internet, GPS and TOR. In fact, it is dollar 2.0. Its rate is controlled by the owners of exchanges.”
The slides were photographed during Ms Kaspersky’s talk at ITMP University in St Petersburg.
In the talk she also claimed that Satoshi Nakamoto, who is credited with creating the currency, was in fact the codename for a collective of US cryptographers.
During the presentation she also shared her theory that your smartphone is not a personal device and is instead used to spy on its owner.
Bitcoin is not going away but it is facing major competition from other cryptocurrencies like Ripple and Monero, Spencer Bogart from Blockchain Capital said.
Speaking to CNBC, he said: “I think now in 2018 we have a lot of people that recognise that bitcoin is not going away.

I think Egypt's military junta has a much stronger grip on the economy than the Turkish military, no? Despite Turkey's military being very powerful, it still doesn't control the Turkish economy as much as Egypt's does. Maybe through that positive influence, the Egyptian military will loosen its control and allow more independent marketing to flourish and succeed like in Turkey. It has already started, actually.
As far as the GCC's use of modern day slavery, that might be a bit of a harsh label but whatever it is, it's working, at least in Saudiya specifically in the agricultural field. Soon Saudiya will have a much larger impact on the Middle East countries than it already has. I think India and China will lead the way with their incredible economic success, even Brazil. I also think that if cooler heads prevail and we stop having tensions & fighting among ourselves and not be plagued by terrorism, it'll open the door wide and make way for much better growth and development. Think of the partnership between many of the ME countries in anti-terrorism campaigns and the resulting successes which have allowed more foreign investments. That's actually the perfect example of cooperation success that's sailed under the radar, so to speak. The key is cooperation in all fields.
