It's a major water way that all ships sail through it, mainland China's warships usually don't sail cross the median line, so technically Taiwan still owns half of the Taiwan strait.

I find it's extremely funny that US threatens to sanction the countries which recently switch their diplomatic relationship from Taiwan to mainland China, while US itself doesn't practice what it preaches to etablish official diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
