True. USA had what Chinese and Russian use for hypersonic weapons already in the 2000s and was playing around with these experiments in the 1980s and 1990s. Americans wanted more capable type of hypersonic weapons. Chinese ones are good but behind American ones and Russian ones are secret maybe somewhere between maybe better maybe worse than both and only prototyping and testing. Anyway this is now about who can prevent these attacks now and the USA is far ahead at intercepting hypersonic weapons.

They have pursued some different types of hypersonic weapons which suit their strategies. Russia and China's are both a bit more similar and based on defence strategies. This is why US adopted loitering hypersonics for more flexible targeting and suit their more numerous positions around the world. They can deploy in more places and not quite so limited like China's and I don't know much about Russia's except they were designing them from the 1990s. But Chinese ones were also being designed in 1990s just not shown at all.

this was already tested by russia avanguard hypersonic icbm system which use warhead loitering and manuevering at hypersonic speed after being launched by icbm moving at hypersonic speed

The Russian launch that is shown is sped up. You can find some other videos on this. It is a video of newer A-135 or A-235 ballistic defense. There are other videos online showing these launches even the same event of launch with wider camera angle and while it is definitely incredible acceleration, it is not like the intensity shown with this camera angles. Anyway these are BMD systems and Soviets had such since 1980s and earlier primitive forms too.

Check out this video on hypersonics. This guy is a Chinese scientists who now makes lots of videos on science topics for primary and high school kids just for their entertainment and get them interested in science. He briefly describes hypersonics. You can get English or whatever language subtitles from youtube when playing with annotation CC settings. He talks about the basic concepts and history from Germany and USA as well mostly.


In comparison of Russian hypersonics, they have Avangarde which they claim is mach 20 to 27. This speed is incredible. Speechless. Chinese DF-17 glider type shown last year is between mach 5 to 10 according to official record but honestly the 2019 shown DF-DZ is one of many Chinese hypersonics with different purposes. We have scramjet ones as well and double wave riding types which previously undone by anyone at least admitted. Russian ones timeline in testing is similar to Chinese ones according to Pentagon. Chinese tests 7 times in 2014 to 2018. According to Pentagon, all tests of Chinese ones were successful but according to Chinese sources one or two of these tests had some issues. American designs of hypersonic weapons like HTV-2 and various types like HyperSoar were all in between 1990s and 2011 but testing were all much later and mixed success according to them. Russian testing success is unknown since not much information provided by US but Russia claims total success and incredible mach 20-27 for avangarde. We will ignore Kinzhal since it is similar to some Chinese and American air launched ballistic types with just massive rocket.

Overall USA has biggest budget and attract best engineers and scientists from everywhere. I expect they have best abilities in hypersonic but don't announce anything much. China has been running towards hypersonic since Qian Xue Shen era. Russia just missing funding but they will definitely not ignore hypersonics so these three countries are serious about it and developing anti-hypersonic technology. Japan is also quickly coming up and was one of earliest to conduct tests even back in 1990s but all failed. Japan will soon develop hypersonic anti ship missiles which they can adopt for surface to surface. China's most interesting one which we showed in public is DF-100 hypersonic cruise missile but this is tip of iceberg I think and hope.

Avangard is their hypersonic nuclear delivery system of unlimited range basically. Zircon based hypersonic will be their short to medium range and can be adopted for anti ship. It is less speed than Avangard but still mach 5 above.

it is impossible to takeout all nuclear weapons storage sites as they are stored at different places but any such attempt will result in nuclear war and total destruction particularly for countries which have sea based second strike capabilities

Zircon types and base will be adopted for Brahmos II according to Indians and Russians. Which means we have something that cannot be intercepted. Right now the truth is Brahmos is not super weapon like Indians claim. It is Oniks based weapon which actually China investigated and did not buy. It is not reported anywhere that Russia offered this to China. I mean it is export anyway and anyone with money can buy from them. 1990s design and 2000s weapon. Huge, not great range, not great maneuvering, fast speed but mach 2 to 3 not above mach 5 so they will replace with BRahmas II which is Zircon for India.

This is partly why China has been fast investigating anti-hypersonic technology but right now Zircon is not sold to India. For Brahmos, every single unit they have, we have more YJ-18, more YJ-12, more CM-400akg, and more thing not showing publicly. Anyway cruise missile with low flight profile and over 1000km range is more useful to be honest. Europe and Americans know speed is not everything. Flight profile, stealth, range, electronic resistance and jamming is more important. But hypersonics are much much better than supersonics of those missiles and the turning capability is better in hypersonic speed due to shockwave riding.

Nuclear sites are all secret for most countries and this is just for silo type missiles like ancient DF-5 silos. The rest is all hidden in cargo ships, cargo trains, mountain tunnels, trucks like DF-31 or DF-41 and all the Russian truck types. They cannot follow them all and anyway there are also submarines with super long range missiles and now some of these will carry hypersonic delivery systems on top of those missile rockets. So if one hypersonic nation target and hit another with hypersonics that cannot be intercepted, then the victim nation will also retaliate with the same and total nuclear war.

A new hypersonic weapon concept has emerged inadvertently on a social media page managed by U.S. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy that proposes describes a Mach 5-plus projectile with the ability to penetrate into defended airspace and dispense a multi-role loitering air system over a target area.

The concept—labeled as the Vintage Racer Loitering Weapon System—reveals a solution to an operational problem for the Army: When high-speed munitions, such as the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), enter service with the ability to strike targets thousands of kilometers away, how will the Army find the most elusive targets, such as road-mobile launchers for intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) or radars for air defense batteries?

The Vintage Racer concept, as revealed so far, suggests it may be possible to launch a hypersonic projectile into a general area without knowing the specific location of the target. As it reaches the target area, the projectile may be able to dispense a loitering air system, which is then uses its own sensors to find and identify the target. If the loitering system also carries a warhead, it may be able to strike the target by itself or transmit the target coordinates to another weapon.

Once the existence of the Vintage Racer concept appeared, a Russian expert on a military-political affairs noted such an idea has been discussed as a possibility within the hypersonic weapon community.

“The fear is that [this] hypersonic ‘something’ might reach the patrol area of road-mobile ICBM launchers [after] penetrating any possible air and missile defense, and then dispense loitering submunitions that will find launchers in the forests,” said Dmitry Stefanovitch, an expert at the Moscow-based Russian International Affairs Council.

Only the broadest information of the Vintage Racer weapon are visible on the briefing paper describing the concept.

The image appears in an album of photos from the AUSA convention posted to McCarthy’s Flickr account last October. Most of the pictures from the event show McCarthy meeting attendees, giving speeches and receiving informal, standing pitches from industry officials in the exhibit hall.

One picture shows McCarthy standing at a table across from an unidentified industry official in the exhibit hall. The table is covered with multiple objects, including a General Atomics press release, what appears to be a model of the LRHW and a rifled barrel of a 155mm artillery gun with a hole burned through the object.

The table is also covered with at least four sheets of briefing papers, of which three are not visible. The only visible paper, which is partly obscured by McCarthy’s right hand, is headlined “Vintage Racer - Loitering Weapon System (LWS) Overview.” The paper includes six main bullet points, which read “Hypersonic Ingress,” “Survivable,” “Time Over Target,” “Multi-role,” “Modular payload,” and “Cost Imposition Strategy.” Ten sub-bullets are also visible on the page, but the letters are not readable.

At the bottom of the page, a tag line highlighted in yellow is partly obscured by McCarthy’s hand, but the visible portion reads: “Long Range, Rapid Ingress.”

A vague reference to Vintage Racer previously appeared in Defense Department budget justification documents released in February, but went unnoticed. Under a line item owned by the Office of Secretary of Defense for a “quick reaction fund,” Vintage Racer is described as a “recent success story.”

“The project successfully validated aerodynamic design with wind tunnel testing and integrated a guidance subsystem for targeted kinetic effects before culminating in a fiscal 2019 flight test. Documentation and prototype technologies transitioned to the U.S. Army for additional development and follow-on acquisition activities,” according to budget documents.

It’s a hypersonic missile/aircraft that will dispense a loitering munition in a target area to go after the most mobile targets such as TELs.

It’s actually a genius weapon concept.

US economy is so massive, those countless wars represent a very little % of its federal spending, US spends trillions on medicare and education, sure when you look at US defense budget as face value its massive, but it only represents 3.4% of its GDP. and that spending has hundreds of billions going into research every year.

US cost of production and salary are quite high. Even though the budget is so big, it doesn't much buy.
