Breaking ranks, In a first, France joins China to build $1.7 billion global infra projects

France has become the first country to join China to jointly build seven infrastructure projects worth over $1.7 billion in Africa, South East Asia and Eastern Europe

February 18, 2022 21:28 IST

France has become the first country to join China to jointly build seven infrastructure projects worth over USD 1.7 billion in Africa, South East Asia and Eastern Europe, in a boost for Beijing in the face of its growing hostility with the US.

Following up on the recent virtual meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the two countries signed the Fourth Round China-France Third-Party Market Cooperation Pilot Project List.

The list includes seven projects in areas like infrastructure, environmental protection and new energy with a total value of over USD 1.7 billion, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here on Friday.

The implementation of key projects in Africa, Southeast Asia, Central and Eastern Europe are demonstrative of the cooperation between Beijing and Paris, China's top planning body National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a press release.

France is the first country to establish the third-party market intergovernmental cooperation mechanism with China, the NDRC said.

The French move to join China, whose Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) drew flack for its debt diplomacy, is being regarded as an image boost for Beijing in the face of its growing hostility with the US.

The US has been highly critical of the BRI projects, which has left scores of lower- and middle-income countries (LMIC) saddled with "hidden debts". In 2021, the United States announced plans to invest in five to 10 large infrastructure projects around the world as part of a broader G-7 initiative to counter China's BRI.

For the next step, China and France will create conditions and build platforms for companies to carry out cooperation in third-party markets and implement more demonstration projects for the benefit of all parties, Wang said.

"French enterprises have a unique advantage in advanced manufacturing, environmental protection and engineering construction, while Chinese firms have accumulated rich experience in basic infrastructure construction, energy, equipment building and the internet. Enterprises from both countries are complementary, and have a huge potential for third-party market cooperation," the NDRC said.

It's great to cooperate and build instead of to gang up and destroy. Lots of opportunities if you remove your own animosity. I don't see why the United States cannot. But then, a country manipulated and controlled by military-industrial complex simply can't.

Guess who is the major threat of China's BRI plan especially in Africa? Who is challenging Chinese dominance in global EPC business (construction outside home country)? It's not US, nor Japan, but France. In fact 3 out of the top 20 largest EPC contractors are French, their competitive edge is having strong political influence in Africa, Eastern Europe even Latin America, and most important of all having IMF in their pocket.

But this China-France deal is good for both sides I guess, less competition, more collaboration, the cake is big enough.

France knew how British and Yankees steal their submarine business, so welcome to BRI

Anything the French did on your list is 10 times more reasonable and acceptable than what the Americans have done in the last 5 years. China is not afraid of competition because the pie is big enough. What the US did were disgusting and shameful. These actions were not competition and based on lies, double standards, twisted narratives, threats, and bullying. I will take the French competitions any day over the Americans'.

Of course the US is disgusting and shameful, the difference is that they are nobody in global EPC business, they only do sabotage for their western vassals like what they did to Huawei. France is tiny but they are no less sneaky, cunning and blood-thirsty than the US, the difference is that they do have some presence in global EPC business (through IMF which in reality is an European interests agent) and will do anything to steal Chinese interests, remember Niger (uranium) and Libya (2011).

Little French frog can be a good kowtower once their population becomes minority majority but they can't be allowed to sit at the same table as Chinese. France is always stabbing Europeans in the back, they side with Mongols against Christian Europe and then they side with Ottomans against their fellow Christians. France then threatened to join Warsaw pact if US did not recognise French ownership of Indochina post WW2. French are a loose cannon wild animal who have no loyalities to anyone.

There is no 100% win deal and 100% lose deal, Striking a balance is also the best solution. Some thorn in a flesh can be your cure in another scenario.

China need to look at bigger picture and same as France. The only country who do things that dont benefit any party is American.

Agree, that's why I said the deal is good. Let them tag along, the pie is big enough anyway, we just have to watch our back.
