Not only that Islamic Radicals have blockaded roads, etc, etc in Pakistan. Its like a seige, they were showing footage from "Geo TV" on CNN-IBN. They had the chief or someone important from Geo TV and he was saying its pretty serious. Somethings going down in Pakistan.

.
I Hope for the sake of good Pakistani's, these kind of idiots will be CRUSHED, There is no other way, Hard decisions have to be made and the time is now. Private individuals should not be let to threaten a nation. If not the world will go into chaos.

.
Yes a soldier has died as per BBC....the police lobbed teargas shells and got several rounds of AK 47 bullets in return.

This cannot be done overnight Adux. Pakistan has born and bred these type of militants for their uses for over 2 decades now, they have used them actively in pursuit of political and diplomatic ambitions of the state. Extremism is common. They cannot suddenly stop this thing. It will take some time, while they should instantly crush such types of ultimatums, etc to send a strong message.

A Pakistani soldier has been killed in clashes with radical Islamist students outside a rebellious mosque in the capital, Islamabad, officials say.
Reports say police fired tear gas at a group of students and that students then opened fire with guns.

For several months armed students and clerics at the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) and its two religious schools have been defying the authorities.

Clerics at the mosque are campaigning for Islamic Sharia law in the capital.

The death of the paramilitary soldier is believed to be the first casualty in the stand-off between the authorities and the students.

"I can confirm that one of our troopers has been killed in the firing from inside the mosque," a senior paramilitary official, Masha Allah, told reporters outside the Lal Masjid.

At least one policeman is also reported to have been wounded.

The students say scores have been affected by the tear gas, with two in a serious condition. One has bullet wounds, the students say.

Students are armed with sticks and petrol bombs and some are wearing masks, the BBC Urdu service's Haroon Rashid who is at the scene says.

Our correspondent says the atmosphere is tense and that he has heard some shots that sounded like they came from within the mosque.

There are two religious schools (madrassas) attached to the mosque, one for men, one for women.

The trouble started when a group of female students came out in large numbers and the paramilitary police used teargas against them.

An official said the move was to prevent the seminary students from taking the law into their own hands.

The Red Mosque and its seminaries have been at the centre of a number of confrontations with the authorities. They include the kidnapping of police and people the mosque says are involved in immoral activities.

Critics have attacked the government for failing to enforce its authority in the capital.

Correspondents say the authorities seem unwilling or unable to act. President Musharraf has said security forces cannot raid the mosque for fear of reprisal suicide attacks.

what a shame...broad day light..heart of a capital..and you have radicals holding AK-47 and the govt cant do anything about it.

.
Well IIRC Lahori had said inan earlier post that its the ISI who is behind these Lal masjid at the behest of Mushraff. He said the earlier flare up was to divert attention from the Cj issue.

But now what? If its the ISI, why are they flaring up this for, the issue was solved a few days ago when the chineese hostages were released, right?

Wuld it be to garner public support to let Mushraff allow NATO hunt for extremists inside Paksitan. Just a guess.

.
Classic example of Women taking advantage of their priveleged position in the sub-continet. Men and Women should be treated equally and when they create trouble should have the same punishment.

.
This has nothing to do with CJ issue in my opinion. Musharraf would rather be a un-democratic military dictator who is against the CJ, than who armed religious thugs in his capital making him look compleltly look incompetent.

.
I think conditions are being created to storm the Lal Masjid. The taking of the chinese citizens by the Lal Masjid brigade would have embarrassed the Gen. Musharraf as China is a good and true ally for Pakistan. By doing that the LM's created a near diplomatic incident and bought them international scrutiny. This storming could trigger of an emergency which would divert attention from the CJ issue and other internal problems. However a frontal assault would not be ideal as any deaths of the LMs would trigger riots in some other areas of Pakistan.

Musharraf will have to use all his skills in defusing the crisis.

Regards

I still stand by what i said earlier

This Lal Masjid drama started on 8th or 9th march exactly at the same time when the reference was sent to SC. But the maulvi Bros were there since august sept 2006

Lal Majid brigade abducted chinese a day before CJ was to start his trip to Fasialabad.

And just yesterday
SC throws out ‘scandalous’ report on CJ: •Intelligence men barred from courts •State lawyer’s licence cancelled

ISLAMABAD, July 2: A visibly disturbed and angry Supreme Court bench on Monday severely criticised government lawyers and suspended the licence of the state-appointed advocate-on-record after finding some highly ‘scandalous’ material both against the chief justice as well as judges in the presidential reference placed before the apex court by the federation’s counsel.

Details

For the next few days Lal masjid will be the topic of discussion of every channel and newspaper rather than the fact that the reference filed by president as admitted by his legal team is false and has serious mistakes

The lastest news says that the Brothers behind the drama have fled the scene. It was always expected.

Wearing gas masks, the Rangers, who were deployed after the recent abduction of Chinese nationals by the students, were seen taking positions around the mosque and the girls madrasa attached to it.

The mosque and madrasa housed over 7,000 students. Two radical clerics heading the mosque had threatened to order suicide attacks in case of any raid by Rangers. The police have already vacated a number of building around the Masjid located in central Islamabad.
