Why are so many Pakistanis getting their panties in a twist over this? This is unlikely to bother most people in India. It is also true that Gandhi would have been upset (don't think he would be shocked, he had seen far worse things) but this is only one of many things that he would have found unpalatable. However I like to think that Gandhi would have been proud of the general tolerance that Indians have, even if there are a few crazies.
Exactly!! Gandhi lived to see one of the worst genocides in Human history during partition - committed purely on religious grounds.
Looks like Mr.Obama is getting his facts directly from the same people who are resisting anti-conversion law. Going by his statements alone, you get a picture of a state where minorities are subjected to sword on a daily basis (a la Middle East) when the situation is not even close to the one he is describing.
Isn't it a hypocrisy of the highest order that the same people who protest anti-conversion law are the ones crying hoarse when somebody like VHP uses the same lure and tactics for Ghar Wapsi?
Why should anybody have problem with anti-conversion law in an extremely diverse country like India? You can't get more religiously tolerant than that!
not in the name of religion though. we don't force non-Christians to convert or if you aren't a Christian doesn't make you a second class citizen.
Nor is any religious minority treated as second class citizen in India, not by law anyway! Far from it!
I can understand any criticism based on castes (even though we are already making a lot of progress getting rid of that scourge). But this criticism based on religious tolerance is a bit harsh and out of place!
India would benefit much for tolerance of minority religions.
Agreed but where exactly is Indian state persecuting its minority religions? In fact, minorities have a free-for-all when it comes to converting Hindus to their spread (just like it is in many developing countries in Africa/Asia/LatAm) and are even resisting the state's attempt to bring an anti-conversion law!
Funny that the President doesn't have anything to say about treatment of religious/ethnic minorities in Saudi/ME which was his last trip where such discrimination is actually sanctioned by the states.
Can't help but think that he perhaps got his facts confused between India and his last minute trip to Saudi Arabia.
