Intermittent firing was heard in the vicinity of the Afghan consulate in Karachi's Old Clifton area on Monday, television reports said.

An Afghan consulate official was fatally shot by a private security guard in Karachi's Old Clifton area on Monday.

The guard, Hayatullah, opened fire on the third secretary, Zaki Adu, in the lobby of the consulate after a personal disagreement arose between the two men, according to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Azad Khan.

Hayatullah, an Afghan national, was taken into custody following the incident and the situation is said to be under control. The DIG said the incident did not appear to be an act of terrorism.

Following the incident, police and Rangers had cordoned off the highly sensitive area which is home to a number of foreign missions.

"We are collecting evidence and will obtain CCTV footage in order to investigate the incident," the DIG said, adding that the consulate had been cleared.

KARACHI: At least one person was killed as unidentified armed men on Monday opened fire near the Afghan Consulate in Karachi’s Clifton area, Express News reported.

Police sources said Muhammad Zaki, a senior consulate official, was killed in the gunfire, however, they refused to provide any further details. “Afghan third-Secretary has been killed in the firing,” SSP South was quoted as saying.

The police official further said consulate security guard Rahatullah, deputed inside the building, opened fire which killed the Afghan diplomat. He said the guard, who hails from Afghanistan, has been taken into custody.

Meanwhile, heavy contingents of Rangers and police arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area for further investigations.



The incident came in wake of several politicians and parliamentarians were planning to visit Kabul in a bid to reduce tensions between the two neighbouring states. Members of the Pak-Afghan parliamentary group asked National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to invite his Afghan counterpart to Pakistan.

KARACHI: One person was killed in a firing incident which took place inside the Afghan Consulate located in Karachi, on Monday.

According to details, a large contingent of police and Rangers rushed to the spot in the city's Clifton area where the Afghan Consulate is located. Firing was heard from within the consulate and reportedly one person had died as a result of the incident.

Muhammad Zaki, appointed as the Third Secretary at the Afghan Consulate, was killed in the attack. Sources revealed that a security guard named Rahatullah had fired the shots which had taken the life of the diplomat. The security guard was also an Afghan citizen.

Police stated that the firing incident had occurred due to a personal grudge or enmity. The firing had taken place inside the lobby of the Afghan Consulate.

Security forces had cordoned off the area and no one was allowed to enter or leave the consulate.

Afghan diplomat shot dead at Karachi consulate in Pakistan



An Afghan diplomat was shot dead on Monday in the Afghan consulate in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi, a police official said.

The consulate's third secretary was killed by a private guard, who has been arrested, said police official Saqib Ismail.

"The motive behind the killing is not clear yet," Ismail said, adding that the gunman was also an Afghan national.
