As for the alcohol ban, it didn't happen at once. There were three stages:

1) It was just told to the Arab's it has its good and bad sides, but it didn't ban it as per the Ayat. (Quran, Al-Baqarah, 2:219).
2) People were told to avoid coming to prayers in an intoxicated state as they did not know what they were saying. (Quran, An-Nisa, 4:43).
3) Finally, the Sahabi's asked for clear guidance, and then it was told to ban its consumption outright but left other uses as medications open, etc. (Quran, 5:91).
