A plane with 81 people on board, including football players from Brazil heading to Colombia for a regional tournament final, has crashed on its way to Medellin's international airport.

It is not clear yet if there are survivors.

"It's a tragedy of huge proportions," Medellin's Mayor Federico Gutierrez told Blu Radio on his way to the site in a mountainous area outside the city where the chartered aircraft is believed to have crashed shortly before midnight local time.

How come the pilot didn't checked the fuel? Totally avoidable accident.

BOGOTA (Reuters) - An aircraft with 81 people aboard, including a Brazilian football team, crashed in central Colombia, and rescuers are moving survivors from the site, the country’s civil aviation association said on its website on Tuesday.

The Chapecoense football team was among the 72 passengers and 9 crew on board the charter aircraft when it crashed around 10 p.m.

Poor weather conditions made the crash site accessible only by road, airport authorities at Medellin, where the plane was scheduled to land, said on social network Twitter.

It confirmed the plane was carrying the soccer team, who were due to play in a final for the South American Cup in Medellin, 245 km (153 miles) from the capital, Bogota, on Wednesday.

The death toll from the crash in Colombia of an airliner carrying 81 people, including a Brazilian football team, rose to 76 Tuesday as officials said at least six people survived the disaster.

"Six people were rescued alive, but unfortunately one died. The rest of the occupants unfortunately died. The tragic toll is 76 victims," Jose Gerardo Acevedo, regional police commander, told journalists earlier.

Colombia's disaster risk management agency said they later rescued a sixth survivor of the crash, player Helio Hermito Zampier Neto, who is in the process of being evacuated.

"The possibility that other people will be found alive has not been ruled out," the agency said.

"It appears that the plane ran out of fuel," Elkin Ospina, the mayor of the nearby town of La Ceja, told AFP.

He said authorities were on the scene and hospitals and medical centres were preparing to receive the injured.

The plane crashed late Monday near the Colombian city of Medellin, officials said. The LaMia aircraft was flying from Bolivia to Medellin when it crashed in an area called Cerro Gordo about 50 kilometres from the city, Colombia's second largest.

Jose Maria Cordova de Rionegro airport, which serves Medellin said in a statement, "all possible aid was being mobilised".

The airport also confirmed that among the 72 passengers and nine crew were members of Chapecoense Real, a Brazilian football club that was supposed to play against Colombia's Atletico Nacional Wednesday in the South American Cup finals.

"Confirmed, the aircraft license number CP2933 was carrying the team @ChapecoenseReal. Apparently there are survivors," the Jose Maria Cordova de Rionegro airport said on its Twitter account.

On its Twitter account, the Medellin airport said the crash site could only be reached overland because of bad weather in the area.

'Aircraft split in two'

A Reuters photographer at the scene said dozens of bodies were laid out and covered with sheets around the wreckage as some 30 rescuers, police and military personnel searched the crash site of the plane that had had 81 people aboard.

He said the BAe 146 charter aircraft had split in two with only the nose and wings recognisable and the tail end completely destroyed in the crash.

Colombia's civil aeronautics agency said it had a team at the airport in response to the crash.

'Pain is terrible', says Chapecoense VP

The vice-president of the Brazilian club Chapecoense whose plane crashed in Colombia on Tuesday lamented that the tragedy had struck at the cruellest moment.

"The pain is terrible. Just as we had made it, I will not say to the top, but to have national prominence, a tragedy like this happens. It is very difficult, a very great tragedy," club vice-president Ivan Tozzo told SportTV.

Officials opened the club's stadium at Chapeco in the state of Santa Caterina in Brazil's south to console the grieving families and fans.

"We're all here at the stadium to help the people connected," said Tozzo.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet. We have to trust in God. Our team must carry on," he said.

The small team's biggest game yet

Chapecoense, from Brazil's top league, had been flying in to face Atletico Nacional of Medellin in the first leg of Wednesday's Sudamericana final, South America’s equivalent of the Europa League.

The club said in a statement that it would not be making any official comments until it had more information from Colombian authorities about Monday night's crash. Brazilian media reported that three players were among the survivors.

It was the first time the small club from Chapeco had reached the final of a major South American club competition but they were underdogs against a club going for a rare double after winning the Copa Libertadores in July.

Chapecoense were the 21st biggest club in Brazil in terms of revenue, bringing in 46 million reals ($13.5 million) in 2015, according to an annual rich list compiled by Brazilian bank Itau BBA.

The club has built its success on a frugal spending policy that eschewed big money signings and instead concentrated on blending young talent and experienced journeymen.

Their best-known player was Cleber Santana, a midfielder whose best years were spent in Spain with Atletico Madrid and Mallorca.

Coach Caio Junior was also experienced, having managed at some of Brazil's biggest clubs, Botafogo, Flamengo and Palmeiras among them

The South American football federation suspended all games and other activities following the crash.

Tributes

The crash evoked memories of Munich air disaster in 1958, which killed 23 people, including eight Manchester United players, journalists and travelling officials.

World governing body FIFA said on Twitter its "thoughts were with the victims, their families, fans of Chapecoense and media organisations in Brazil on this tragic day".

Brazilian President Michel Temer expressed his grief: "I express my solidarity in this sad hour during which tragedy has beset dozens of Brazilian families," he said, adding that Brazil's foreign ministry and Air Force were working to assist the relatives.

"The government will do all it can to alleviate the pain of the friends and family of sport and national journalism."

This is a very very sad day! as this could have been prevented. The aeroplane, an Avro RJ-85 is registered as CP-2933 BAE 146 - 4 engine, in the assumed configuration with 72 passengers was unable to fly the 1600 NM trip because of range limitations

This plane had already flown CBB-MDE on October 28. This route is only 86 nm shorter, but CBB is at 8.400 ft above sea level!. Probably the takeoff weight restrictions due to altitude limited the payload so the plane was able to fly the route alright.

VVI lies at 1240 ft above sea level. There are no weight limitations on take off except the MTOW. The pilot really pushed the plane to the limit accounting for the 72 people on board plus luggage.

The fan blades seem to be intact, indicating that the engine was not working before the crash.

Based on flt. plan per FRadar24 data (around 1600 NM route), winds aloft enroute, 72 passengers, and normal per pssgr. wt. and per pssgr. baggage wt., and assuming around 1,000 lbs of other cargo (soccer eqpt., media eqpt., etc.) subsequent prelim. calcs for fuel burn for a BAE146-200 w/ ALF-502R5 engines (don’t know if this exactly matches the actual aircraft), based on 15 min taxi, 45 min reserves, 30 min. hold, and SKMD alternate yields fuel reqd. greater than the aircraft published max. fuel capacity and takeoff wt. with that reqd. fuel would have been above max. takeoff wt.

Alternate calcs. based on 15 min. taxi, 5% reserves, and 30 min. hold, and SKMD alternate yields fuel reqd. still greater than the aircraft published max. fuel capacity, and takeoff wt. with that reqd. fuel also still greater than max. takeoff wt.

Appears that the payload may have been too great for the available max. fuel capacity vs. total fuel reqd. and actual trip NM distance (greater than published aircraft max. NM range at near max. T.O. wt.) The Avro did not have the range to make this flight in the first place. If this turns out to be true it's an unforgivable mistake!

Both cases indicate insufficient fuel (reqd. vs. aircraft fuel capacity) for this flight duration (including 2 turns hold at RNG), and act. route NM. LMI 2933 could have run out of fuel near RNG VOR. FRadar24 data shows a rapid and large decrease in TAS after coming out of the RNG hold and with very high neg. vertical speed….may have been in a glide due to fuel exhaustion coming out of RNG hold to reach SKRG airport.

As currently reported, no fuel was present at the crash location and no fire.

In Conclusion - This could have been totally avoided if the pilots paid attention to MTOW, range and fuel burn along with whether restrictions if any.

BOGOTA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- An airplane carrying 81 people including members of a Brazilian football team has crashed in Colombia, killing 76 people and leaving only five survivors, the Colombian police said Tuesday.

The aircraft that crashed after disappearing in Colombian airspace was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members.

Three players from the Brazilian football team survived the crash, according to Brazilian media.

The crash site is in a mountainous area outside the Colombian city of Medellin, the destination of the chartered plane, as the Brazilian football team was expected to take part in a game Wednesday.

According to airport authorities at the scheduled destination, poor weather conditions have made the crash site difficult to reach.

It is not immediately known what caused the crash.

Around 120,000 people expect to attend funeral for Chapecoense players
2016-12-03 11:08 | Xinhua | Editor: Wang Fan

Around 120,000 people, including celebrities, politicians, athletes and journalists are expected to attend the funeral of the Chapecoense players and coaches killed Monday in a plane crash.

The funeral will be held on Saturday on the grass of Arena Conda, Chapecoense's home ground in the southern city of Chapeco. It is expected to be the largest event ever held in the city of 200,000 people.

On Monday, LaMia Flight 2933 crashed in Colombia, killing 71 people, including 19 Chapecoense players, most of the club's training staff and a number of journalists and guests.

"It is one of the largest operations ever seen in the city. 20,000 people will be inside the stadium and 100,000 will follow the ceremony on screens outside it. This is all very painful but Chapeco will overcome," said the deputy mayor of the city, Elio Francisco Cella, in a press conference.

Access to the stadium will be restricted to the families and friends of the victims and not to the general public.

Furthermore, the body of the coach, Caio Junior, will be buried in his home of Curitiba, while the remains of team captain Cleber Santana will be sent to his family in the northeastern city of Recife.

Three planes of the Brazilian airforce arrived in the Colombian city of Medellin to collect the bodies and bring them home.

The bodies are set to arrive in Chapeco on Saturday morning and around 1,000 journalists from Brazil and around the world have arrived, as well as FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, Brazilian national coach, Tite, and representatives from a number of foreign clubs.

Clubs from Brazil's first division and around the world have all offered to loan players to the club for free.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) also announced that Chapecoense would not face relegation from the top division for the next three seasons. All football matches have also been suspended for seven days.

*******

My heart goes out to the team and their family.

Tragically the results could have been much different if the pilot was allowed to use his hands.
