LAHORE: As the capital city investigation police claim arrest of 10 of the 12 suspects who murdered a 16-year-old boy by hitting hard objects following an altercation in Askari X Cantonment on Feb 8, the influential father of the two prime suspects is making efforts to get ‘favour’ from the police.
Sources claimed that the police were aggressively dealing with the suspects as the chief minister had given them a green signal to make arrests.
Syed Muhammad Murtaza, an O-level student, was brutally beaten by Humayun Sajjad, his brother Raza Sajjad, their uncle Irfan and their eight accomplices in Askari X market on Feb 8. He died in a state of coma at the ICU of Combined Military Hospital on Feb 11.
The city police authorities shifted the investigation of the case to the Crimes Investigation Agency after receiving complaints that the North Cantonment investigation police led by Cantonment SP (Investigation) Mustafa Hameed Malik committed negligence while dealing with the case casually.
The detail of the incident shared with Dawn by the police investigators on Sunday showed that suspects Humayun and Raza, sons of ex-police constable Sajjad who currently owns Al Raheem Gardens Housing Society and lives in Askari X, teased a female family member of neighbour Saif, an FC College student, a few days ago.
Both sides exchanged heated arguments following the incident and the suspects nursed grudge against Saif. On Feb 8, Saif was in the market along with his friends including Murtaza, also a resident of Askari X, when Humayun and Raza reached there and again got into an altercation.
The suspects then left the venue only to return to the market along with their 10 accomplices armed with rods, vipers and clubs. Saif and his two friends managed to escape after receiving some thrashing but Murtaza, who went to the market to buy medicine, got trapped and was grabbed by the suspects who brutally tortured him and left him nursing a head wound. The injured was admitted to the CMH.
Two security guards of the residential society acted as silent spectators during the street fight. The police initially took them into custody but later released them.
The family approached the police for registration of a case on Feb 10 and a case was registered under hurt section of the Pakistan Penal Code. After Murtaza succumbed to his deep skull wound on Feb 11, the section 302 was inserted in the case.
The CCTV footage of the incident hit the social media and people vociferously demanded justice for the victim.
Police sources directly associated with the investigation told Dawn that five of the six nominated persons and five who were unidentified by the time the case was registered had been taken into custody. They said one of the nominated suspectsAmeer Abdullah, Humayaun’s friend who is a resident of Askari X, was arrested from the house of deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Special Branch while two others are Sajjad’s brothers, Irfan and Tahir.
The sources claimed that two prime suspects (brothers) had secured bails and added that the chief minister had ordered the police to decide the case on merit. They said father of suspect brothers, Sajjad, who also worked as constable in the SB, was trying to pressure the police through different channels to lend him support.
Syed Mujtaba, elder brother of Murtaza and complainant in the case, told Dawn by phone that his family wanted justice. He said the police were cooperating with the family due to active media campaign.
Revealing the incident, he said Murtaza went to the market to buy mother’s medicine where he met Saif and his friends. As the suspects led by Humayun, Raza and their uncle reached there and started beating Saif and his friends, Murtaza, who was above six feet, tried to intervene and managed to save Saif. One of the suspects meanwhile hit a club on Murtaza’s head and others followed.
Mujtaba said he was close to the market and reached the spot, where he found his brother in a pool of blood.
“The police have told us that they have arrested four nominated persons and are conducting raids to arrest the remaining. We want the police to investigate the case without any influence and bring the killers of my brother to book as we lack resources and influence,” he said.
He said neither he knew who was arrested by the police nor did they receive any threatening call from the suspects.
Murtaza was the brother of the complainant and two sisters. Their father lives in the USA.
