BrahMos missile to be inducted into Air Force in 2012

India prepares to induct air version of BRAHMOS missile

The air version of BrahMos will fly at a speed of Mach 2.8, while the land-launched version will have a speed higher than Mach 5. The air version will be integrated on Ilyushin Il-38 maritime surveillance planes and the Su-30 MKI.
The aerial version will be shorter than the standard land or marine versions, and will have the capability to auto-launch toward a target after being released from the aircraft, an Indian Air Force official said.

Although it might more then a couple of years (2012) to induct BrahMos fully into the AF it seems a formidable development.

My question though is :
Will we be able to use this kind of missible in an anti-AWACS role?
Can we develop is as a carrier for tactical nukes?

.
Indian make pakistani forum dirty vs pakistani makes pakistani forum dirty.....which sounds worse,mr stealth??

Aghni Test failed ?
Arjun not meets our Requirements ?

You would know the rules better because you are a staff member. But all that you mentioned is TROLL because its off-topic!

I seriously expected more from a staff member of PDF.

No, it's an anti-ship and surface attack cruise missile and not an a2a missile. This might be what you are searching for:

India has no first strike policy, that's why I doubt such small warheads that could fit in Brahmos will serve our nuke policies.

1.Thanks sancho though I am aware of Novator and that precisely the reason why I am looking forward to tweak Brahmos to play an Anti-Awacs role. So my reformed question is :

Can we modify a brahmos to perform anti-awacs thing? How difficult will it be?

2. Wont it be good to nuclearise a thing which moves at 2.8/4 mach :P. Almost unbeatable by convention missile defences

When we say anything from Pakistan side against Indian military hardware so "ITS TROLL" and when u guyz say anything against Pakistan Military Hardware so thats "FACTS AND FIGURE LOL" growup growup!

When you talk about Arjun tanks in a missile thread, then yes thats called trolling.

I think, if anything, the BrahMos 2 (or whatever it will be called in its' hypersonic state) will be a more capable AWACS killer. The one issue I have is that because of international treaties Russia is a part of, the range of the BrahMos is not exactly sufficient for very long range attacks. I'm sure the BrahMos2 will also be similarly medium range.

Perhaps a longer range missile will be developed in the future -- off of the accomplishments of these tests.

That's why K-100 type missiles will be developed. Why should we use a 2,5t cruise missile with a warhead of severall 100 Kg to shoot down an AWACS aircraft?
The advantage of Brahmos is speed, this gives it an advantage when attacking a highly defended ground target. An AWACS aircraft will have chaff and flares, but no active defense weapon, so where is the need of speed? Just like you said, the main point will be long range and there are other missiles available with comparable, or even better range than Brahmos.

.
You are totally correct. And while cruise missiles are radar guided by nature, it's not really up to a cruise missile to take down AWACS / Refuelers / large, high priority air targets.

I'm not completely sold on the idea of a hypersonic cruise missile at this stage ... but I'm no missile expert. I've be more focused upon range, accuracy and payload. (Though speed definitely has advantages of its' own in terms of attacking ground forces / penetrating coverage)

The biggest advantages of inducting brahmos on su- MkI is the increase of the range of brahmos .It enhance the effective of the missile to deliver deep inside the enemy territory .:victory:

there are many news coming from India, that they will test plenty of new things from 2010 to 2012. let's see!:)

Technically speaking, the Russians are bound by a treaty they signed with the US to limit the proliferation of missile technology, which is why the Brahmos is officially stated to have a range of 290 kms which is just under the limit of 300 kms as per their obligations.

Realistically speaking however, both countries have made significant investments and India eventually plans on using the missile to deliver nuclear warheads, its real range is almost certainly much higher than stated.
