THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The country's prestigious 'BrahMos' missile would be inducted into the Air Force in 2012 that would ensure all the three

wings of the military are equipped with the supersonic cruise missile, a top defence official said on Wednesday.

"We have developed the airborne missile part, and process of integrating it with the aircraft 'Sukhoi' was progressing", BrahMos Aerospace Ltd CMD A Shivathanu Pillai said at the BrahMos Aerospace's facility here.

Trial run of airborne BrahMos missile would be held next year and the target was to integrate it with the aircraft in 2012, he said.

As far as integration of the missile was concerned, the original designers of the aircraft were also involved, he said.

"We are working with them (Sukhoi). Some changes are necessary and once the alteration is identified, we will introduce the same in the aircraft," Pillai said.

With that, all the three wings of Indian military -- Air Force, Navy and Army -- would have the supersonic missile 'BrahMos', he said.

Development of a new version of BrahMos missile, involving a technology that would discriminate the target and attack, in 2009 was a major achievement, he added.

Three flights on the new version had proved successful and the army would be inducting two more of this version shortly, Pillai said.

On the next generation cruise missile, he said hypersonic BrahMos missile was in design stage.

IAF Sukhoi-30MKI jets in Russia for BrahMos aerial version retrofit programme

New Delhi: The Indo-Russian cruise missile joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace, is working towards crossing yet another milestone with the dispatch to Russia of two Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets for a retrofit programme that would enable them to launch the aerial version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

Once the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile crosses this particular milestone it will become a "universal cruise missile" as it is already capable of being launched from land and sea–based platforms, including submarines.

Apart from the submarine version all other land and naval versions have already been inducted for service with the Indian Army and Navy.

"The aerial version of the BrahMos missiles will be delivered from the Su-30MKI platform. We were in talks with Sukhoi and the IAF for it. Finally two Su-30MKIs of the IAF have been sent to Russia for retrofitting," a senior official of BrahMos Aerospace
"The aerial version of BrahMos is coming along very well. After being programmed, the missile will be released from the aircraft and will auto-launch towards its target when it reaches an altitude of 50 metres," the official said.

"The aerial version is nearly nine metres long and this requires modifications of the aircraft's fuselage. Since the Sukhoi company is busy with designing a fifth generation fighter, DRDO scientists, along with Russian experts, will carry out the necessary modifications," the official said.

The modifications are expected to be complete by early 2010

India prepares to induct air version of BRAHMOS missile

NEW DELHI: Indian scientists have completed development of the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos for all three military services. While the Navy version was the first to be inducted in 2006, the Army ordered $2 billion worth of land-based BrahMos missiles last month. The latest version to be developed - the air-launched version - has a range of 290 kilometers.
Two Indian Air Force Su-30 MKI combat jets have arrived at unknown Russian facilities, where the BrahMos will be mounted on the multirole aircraft for final testing.
The air version of BrahMos will fly at a speed of Mach 2.8, while the land-launched version will have a speed higher than Mach 5. The air version will be integrated on Ilyushin Il-38 maritime surveillance planes and the Su-30 MKI.
The aerial version will be shorter than the standard land or marine versions, and will have the capability to auto-launch toward a target after being released from the aircraft, an Indian Air Force official said.
The BrahMos has been developed by the BrahMos Corp., a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia.
