India's indigenous supersonic cruise missile, BrahMos, had failed in its latest test conducted at Chandipur off Odisha coast, the Parliament has been informed.
Defence Minister A.K. Antony told the Rajya Sabha, the council of states, that a developmental flight test of BrahMos was carried out on July 29 this year with 25 new components and sub-systems such as new power systems, materials for airframe components, guidance scheme and various electric systems produced in India, substituting those made in Russia.
"In this test, except for one sub-system, all other sub-systems and components have performed to the requirement," Antony said in his written reply to questions.
The malfunction of the sub-system resulted in increase in velocity of the missile, crossing the limit and leading to aborting the mission.
"The defect has been rectified after analysis. Further development flight tests will be conducted as a measure of self-reliance," Antony said.
The test flight of BrahMos, a 290-km cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia, was carried out from the integrated test range at Chandipur on July 29. This was the 32nd test of BrahMos that can touch three Mach (three times the speed of sound) speeds.
The objective of the mission was to evaluate some of the newer subsystems which are produced from the Indian industry as part of production stabilisation
The data obtained from the test-firing was analysed for large-scale production of the sub-systems and components by Indian industries.
It was an experimental flight of the two-stage missile -- the first being solid and the second one ramjet liquid propellant.
The missile has already been inducted into the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. The Indian Air Force version of BrahMos is in the final stages of trials.
The Indian Navy first inducted the BrahMos-I version of the missile in 2005 and INS Rajput, a guided missile destroyer, was the first class of Indian warship to deploy it on board.
Later, Indian Army inducted the missile in two of its regiments and deployed them along the borders with Pakistan. The army now plans to deploy the missiles in a regiment in the northeastern part of India too along the borders with China in the near future.
The BrahMos missile's air and submarine launch version are being developed.
BrahMos missile is a joint venture between India and Russia under the Brahmos Aerospace headed by Indian Defence scientist A. Sivathanu Pillai.
The previous trial of BrahMos was conducted successfully on March 28 this year from Chandipur.
