Brahmos Cruise Missile - Russia & India

India test-fires supersonic cruise missile
Updated at: 1330 PST, Tuesday, January 20, 2009

NEW DELHI: India's military Tuesday tested a surface-to-surface version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile which it had developed jointly with Russia, a defence ministry spokesman said.

The missile was fired from the Pokhran range in the western desert state of Rajasthan, bordering Pakistan that was also the site of India's nuclear tests in 1998.

The official said the test was "routine," but it comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the Mumbai militant attacks that New Delhi says were directed from Pakistani soil.

The BrahMos has a range of 290 kilometres (180 miles) and can carry a 300-kilogram (660 pounds) conventional warhead.

The eight-metre (26-foot) missile weighs about three metric tonnes and can be launched from land, ships, submarines or aircraft, traveling at a speed of up to Mach 2.8.

A version of the BrahMos is already used by the Indian navy. First tested in June 2001, the missile is named after India's Brahmaputra River and Russia's Moskva River.

Indian air force to receive BrahMos cruise missiles in 2012

BANGALORE (India), February 12 (RIA Novosti) - The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile will be commissioned by the Indian air force in 2012, the head of the BrahMos Aerospace company said on Thursday.

Established in 1998, BrahMos Aerospace, a joint Indian-Russian venture, produces and markets BrahMos supersonic missiles, whose sea-based and land-based versions have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian army and navy.

"The [BrahMos] missile will be put in service in 2012," the company's CEO, Sivathanu Pillai said, presenting the airborne version of the missile at the Aero India-2009 air show in India.

The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 km (180 miles) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg (660 pounds). It can effectively engage ground targets from an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

"For the airborne version...we had to reduce the mass of the missile and to ensure aerodynamic stability after its separation from the aircraft. The air-launched platform has its own initial speed during the launch of the missile, so we have reduced the size of the booster. Now the missile is ready," Pillai told RIA Novosti in an exclusive interview last year.

The Indian Air Force had chosen Russian-made SU-30 MKI Flanker-H multirole fighter as a trial platform for the missile, but it will take up to four years to complete the upgrade of the aircraft so that it can carry and launch BrahMos missiles, the official added.

India is planning to produce at least 140 Su-30MKI fighters by 2014 under a Russian license with full technology transfer rights.

Analysts estimate that India could purchase up to 1,000 BrahMos missiles for its armed forces in the next decade, and export 2,000 to other countries during the same period.

During a visit by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov to India last year, the two sides agreed to develop a hypersonic version of the missile, to be known as BrahMos-2.

Brahmos II to be Ready by 2013: Sivathanu Pillai
Dated 2/3/2009

Brahmos Aerospace was working on hypersonic missile project, Brahmos II, and it was expected to be ready by 2013, a top defence official told reporters.

"Once developed, the Missile would have a speed between Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound) and Mach 7", Chief Controller of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), A Sivathanu Pillai, told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of an exhibition of armoured vehicles by Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), organised as part of the DRDO Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Pillai, also the CMD of Brahmos, said the future wars would be fought with minimum people using high-powered weapons. "It will be a network centric and fought with intelligent and autonomous systems", he said, adding cyber warfare and robotic systems would dominate the battlefield.

Later in the presence of Sivathanu Pillai, an MoU was signed between CVRDE and Anna University to develop various combat vehicles for future defence purpose. The MoU would facilitate students of the University gain access to high technology labs of CVRDE at Avadi, Outstanding Director of CVRDE, S Sundaresh later said.

BrahMos II Missile Faces New Test: DRDO Sources

NEW DELHI - India's homegrown BrahMos II, which scientists here claim is the fastest cruise missiles in the world at 5.26 Mach, is likely to be tested this week, said sources in the government's Defence Research and Development Organisation, (DRDO), which is developing the missile.

In a January test, BrahMos II deviated from its flight path, but scientists have developed a new seeker head for the missile, the sources said, and the upcoming test would check its parameters.

BrahMos, a joint venture between India and Russia, is developing the hypersonic BrahMos II, which is expected to be commissioned by 2013, the DRDO sources said. It will be used mainly by the Army against land targets.

Indian land and naval forces use the supersonic BrahMos I, inducted in 2007, at speeds of 2.5 Mach. The air version, still under development, will be mounted on the Russian-built Su-30 MKI Multirole aircraft.

The Indian Army's BrahMos I, with a range of more than 280 kilometers, can carry a nuclear warhead, is mounted on Tatra trucks and can be launched from a flatbed railway wagon.

Pakistan is developing a 500-kilometer-range cruise missile, the Babur, but it is not known when the missile will be inducted.

no brahmos is not indian made it is russian made only panted by indians

LOLLLL
I guess that's why the missile's tested in INDIA ^^. I'm guess Russians came over to India, take a little tour and test their missile on our land. And give us credit for our paint and test site. NOT...

And I'm glad they started a Brahmos II. It's said to have speeds reaching Mach 5-6.

Dispute over BrahMos field trial continues

NEW DELHI: It has been more than a week since a new version of supersonic cruise missile was test-fired but the Army is still to make up its mind on whether it was successful or not.

The result of the test carried out at the Army’s Pokhran field firing range in Rajasthan on March 4 is still being evaluated, said officials. Even as Brah- Mos Aerospace officials have claimed that the missile achieved the desired results during the trial, the Army still maintains that it is evaluating the general staff quality requirements.

The dispute over the trial result has only widened the rift between the Army and the scientific establishment. The BrahMos officials claim that the missile had hit the target within the error probability.

The Army claims that since it is going to be the end-user, it should be fully satisfied whether the weapon system is capable of delivering as per its requirements.

This was the second test of the missile after a trial conducted in January had failed.

The Army wanted the cruise missile to identify and hit a target among a group of objects. In the first test, the missile had completely failed and the scientists blamed it on a defect in the homing software which was being used for the first time.

BrahMos has a range of 290 km but the new version is being tested in a short range scenario. The missile was assigned to hit the target within a distance of around 40 km. It becomes more challenging to guide the supersonic missile within a short distance. The duration of the test was a mere 150 seconds.

The difference of opinion between the Army and the BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russian Federal Unitary Enterprise, has added to the widening rift between the developer and the end-user.

It has opened the debate in the defence establishment over the quality of indigenous weapons systems being developed by DRDO. The Army still has problems with the main battle tank Arjun.

It came to a point when the entire project was close to being scrapped till it was revived by the personal intervention of Defence Minister A K Antony.

The Air Force is not satisfied with the home built Light Combat Aircraft.

The scientific establishment feels that there is a lobby within the Armed Forces that prefers to go for foreign equipment.

'Longest wait for the fastest missile test - I love this title.

I suppose the Brahmos is about as Indengious Indian made AS THE JF17 THUNDER is a Pakistani Effort.

Or does the WORD joint development mean something different wen indo/Russian AND sino/pak. are concerned ????

The Indian contribution is in the form of the missile guidance software...while the motor and the designing is russian.

Somebody is yet to tell me what the PAkistani contribution was in the development of the Thunder.
Even the MKI had known Indian equipment....what does the Jf-17 have that is made in Pakistan?

They paid $500 million and set the paremters ie minimum capability.

The testing to IOC will be done both in China & Pakistan.

Tech wise its all chinease. ie Chinease Radar KLJ7 chinease missles, Russian engine and built in Chengdu China.

^^^^ So what you're saying is that even Pakistan is using Chinese sweatshops!!!....LOL

Seriously though....Im sick of all the hypocrisy/double standards from some members here.....
