An interesting Bombing map of London-Raids carried out on London by the Luftwaffe beginning 1940. In the Image where my relatives live today, the numbers are number of HE bombs fallen on that area/

There was the airbase at Hendon, now the RAF Museum, but the Luftwaffe also bombed most of the city as you can see.

I heard some stories of the London Blitz from a (now departed) relative of mine who was training in UK then with the RN at Pompey. The first time that he came under fire was at Dunkirk when as a S/Lt. he was appointed in command of a Fishing Trawler as part of the fleet of "Little Ships". Then later service with the Arctic Convoys followed ending with VE-Day. Interesting times, those seem to have been.

Hey my late Dad commanded minesweeping Trawlers though he was not at Dunkirk.. he did a few runs to Murmansk though. This trawler snapped fishing in the 1930's taken up for trade in 1940's and fitted with guns and sweep gear, he was First Lt there before his own command

My Mum was visiting my Dad in London when he got some leave from the Navy.. there was a heavy raid on and she had to keep rushing into the shelters.. , as the bombs came down dust fell on them from the shelter roof and the noise was scary . She said she thought he next bomb would get them. Between running for shelter she would look up and see the contrails of the bombers and the British Fighters totally covering the sky.. after the raids the kids would run around picking up bits of shrapnel and bullet cases. Scary times. a cousin of mine was killed.. during a raid the Warden told her to shelter in a house- which was obliterated minutes later.

Yeah , sounds scary. Just imagine how scary the nuke bombs must have sounded to the Japanese.
