If you thought your work place was hard core about staff fag breaks, spare a thought for Bollywood actress, Mahira Khan.
The 32-year-old star, who is from Pakistan, was the centre of controversy this week, after pictures emerged on social media of her outside a New York restaurant, wearing a Marilyn Monroe inspired backless dress and smoking a fag with actor and rumoured real life boyfriend, Ranbir Kapoor – while looking a little bit worse for wear.
Though the pictures were taken in July, while Ranbir was filming a biopic of controversial Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, the snaps have only just come to light now and have led to accusations from some fans and conservative Islamic groups that Mahira, who is Muslim, has brought her faith into disrepute and sold out her country.
Mahira was already a massive star back home, having starred in a string of hit TV serials and films, including Bol, before becoming one of the few actors from Pakistan to successfully cross over into Bollywood after starring opposite My Name is Khan legend Shah Rukh Khan in 2016 film Raees.
However, her transition into Bollywood films hit the skids after tensions between the two countries led to a ban on stars from Pakistan working in the Indian film industry.
While the actress and mum of one has remained silent over the controversy, many of her Bollywood and Pakistan entertainment industry alumnae have rushed to her defence, not least, Ranbir himself, adding fuel to the rumours that the glamorous twosome have been dancing round trees off screen as well as on.
‘I’ve gotten to know Mahira in a personal capacity over the last few months,’ Ranbir said.
‘She is somebody who I admire and respect, for her achievements and even more for the person she is. It is very unfair the way she is being judged and spoken about. What is also sad is the inequality in judgement just because she is a woman. I request you to stop the negativity and move on with your beautiful god gifted lives. PS – Both smoking and hate are injurious to health.’
Ever since Mahira met Ranbir, who is the son of Bollywood legend, Rishi Kapoor, at the Global Teacher Prize event in Dubai earlier this year, the pair have been surrounded by rumours of romance, which have not been confirmed by either party.
Ranbir himself is also no stranger to the gossip columns, having been linked to a bevy of Bollywood beauties, including half British/half Indian actress Katrina Kaif, who grew up in Finchley.
