Chinese posters:

listen from 2:28 to 5:43 for some shocking funfact(at least to me, cos i have never read about this anywhere before)

for those who are keen to know what the video's content is, its about this taiwanese analyst(the balding dude) rebuking America's claim that Huawei is a national security threat when Boeing itself- is an instrument of the CIA- and goes on to cite the evidences for this.

PS i found the news about what the analyst was refering to from 13 years ago:

China finds spy bugs on presidential jet made in U.S.

China's government bought a new jetliner for President Jiang Zemin's personal use from Chicago-based Boeing Co. last summer and loved the purchase, until Chinese intelligence agents reportedly discovered it was riddled with listening devices.

China's government isn't saying anything about the alleged incident, but two Western newspapers reported that more than 20 bugs were discovered in the Boeing 767-300ER, including one device in the headboard of the presidential bed and another in a lavatory.

Bought for President Jiang

The plane, built and specially equipped for Jiang at different sites around the United States, now is said to sit unused, its innards torn apart, at a military airfield outside Beijing, while Jiang fumes about the incident, according to reports in The Washington Post and the Financial Times of London.

The Chinese blame U.S. intelligence agencies for the incident and apparently are considering making the discovery an issue during a meeting next month in Beijing between Jiang and President Bush. However, there was no way to immediately confirm the incident or to assess whether it might damage relations between the U.S. and China or affect business ties.

That the U.S. and China spy on each other is an accepted fact in the relationship, though tension rose last year when an American Navy surveillance plane and its crew were detained in China after the damaged aircraft landed at a Chinese military airfield.

The United States and the Soviet Union overcame a notorious episode in which the U.S. discovered Soviet listening devices in its newly built embassy in Moscow.

"Everyone knows the Americans spy on us," an unidentified Chinese official told the Financial Times. "But I am not sure if the government will want to use this incident against the U.S. because relations are supposed to be getting better these days."

Jiang's aircraft was said to be bugged while being refitted in the U.S. even though the Chinese government carefully oversaw all work.

The Times said the bugs were detected after the aircraft emitted a strange whine during test flights in China in September, shortly after it was delivered.

High-tech eavesdropping

The listening devices were said to be highly sophisticated and linked to satellites.

The plane was built in Seattle and then sent to San Antonio International Airport for refitting by several aircraft firms. The plane was believed to cost $120 million, plus $10 million in extras added during the tense relations after the April incident in which the American Navy surveillance plane collided with a Chinese fighter jet and then landed at a Chinese base.

According to a report last year in the San Antonio Express-News, Chinese security guards provided round-the-clock security for the plane while it was being refitted.

Plane can carry 100

The newspaper said the plane was retrofitted to accommodate about 100 people. It has beige leather chairs that could be converted into beds, and a presidential suite was added that consisted of a bedroom, sitting room and bath with shower. Also added were a 48-inch television set, satellite communications and advanced avionics.

Several executives of the firms said they had no idea how the listening devices were added, and they reported that the Chinese seemed happy with the job and did not complain.

"We had an excellent relationship with every Chinese official who worked on this project," Robert Sanchez, chief operations officer at Gore Design Completions of San Antonio, told the Post. "We're not in the business of doing things like this."

Work was completed on the plane in August, and it was flown to China on Aug. 10, stopping in Honolulu. A group of American workers and their families accompanied the plane as guests of the Chinese government, Sanchez said.

"The Chinese were very happy with the aircraft and with the work we did," Sanchez said. "They took the workers to the Great Wall and showed them around. Why would any of these corporations or workers consider that, if they knew anything about this?"

Larry McCracken, spokesman for Boeing Co., said the company knows nothing about the situation other than what was on news wires Saturday. He said Boeing sold the jetliner to Delta Air Lines in 2000.

"We knew Delta was selling it to the Chinese," he said. "It then went down to San Antonio, where it was modified, and then it went to China."

The Post said Western diplomats and executives learned of the case in mid-October when Chinese officials with whom they normally did business did not appear for meetings. Chinese friends and colleagues told them the officials had been arrested.

U.S. refuses to comment

Officials at the State Department in Washington and the U.S. Embassy in Beijing had no comment.

At the White House, spokesman Taylor Gross said: "We never discuss these kinds of allegations."

China's Foreign Ministry did not answer calls.

Employees of the China Aviation Supply Export & Import Corp., which bought the plane, refused to comment. Randy Harrison, a Boeing spokesman in Seattle, said he had no knowledge of the reports.

I believe this forms part of the impetus for the push to have the C919, C929 and C939- free from Western espionage and control.

. .
Wasn't Boeing also make Military Hardware?

Weren't the "Threat" was supposed to be calculated? I mean I would not hire a Private Military Outfit for a foreign government to do the security for my wedding party. Especially not from a country who I thought to be the enemy of my country.

.
Um..so why did China risk buying "unreliable" Western US planes for Jiang Zemin instead of "reliable" Eastern planes?

Lol, that's my point, I mean it's like United States President is using Tu-114 as Air Force One then complaint about the Russian bug it......

Maybe the sole reason for the Chinese to buy Boeing is so that they can complain about Boeing?

Not only did they buy the plane but instead of retrofitting the interior themselves they hired some no-name 3rd party US company (probably located across the street from an FBI office} to rip the entire interior out and put in luxury stuff.

Hmm..still don't see them flying "reliable" Ilyushins.

Do u understand the meaning of 'reliability' in the context of this video and article?

Yes or no?

Since China couldn’t retrofit the interior of a Boeing themselves maybe a better choice would have been to ask their old pal Russia to find a company to customize the Boeing...since there is no way the KGB would ever think of installing any spy equipment...since they have zero interest in knowing anything China does...it would be a safe deal.

BTW do you understand Boeing didn’t do the refit??
It’s like somebody buying a new Mercedes and then taking it to another company who guts the interior and turns it into a stretch limo. Mercedes doesn’t make stretch limos. It’s like finding a bug in the disco ball and saying Mercedes did it.

Mercedes bugged the disco lights in my limo

The only thing original on the inside of that plane was the cockpit the rest was removed.

how do u definitively know that Boeing or ANY1 didnt do any clandestine tweaking to the plane anywhere right from production to the time the Chinese president got on the plane?

hence, your hilarious analog is irrelevant(appreciate it that u tried coming up with one tho).

also why change your tune now? u talked about eastern planes and their reliability:

This means u either intentionally or ignorantly focused on the technical aspect of 'reliability'- not the trust aspect the video and the analyst was focused on.

how do u definitively know that Boeing or ANY1 didnt do any clandestine tweaking to the plane anywhere right from production to the time the Chinese president got on the plane? If the Chinese were as dumb as what Americans thought or hoped them to be, the former wouldnt be the latter's largest foreign creditor.

hence, your hilarious analog is irrelevant(appreciate it that u aatully bothered to make the effort to come up with one tho HAHA).

PS* i forgot to add in that there are indeed the technical aspects of 'reliability' being discussed in other parts of the video(after the section that i highlighted)- such as the software faults that caused the crashes of the 737 MAX

While not definite, but if the Chinese Intelligence found the bugs AFTER taking procession of the plane and after using it, that most likely mean either.
  • The Chinese authority did not check the plane out of Boeing Plant.
  • The bugs was planted by one of the contractor that work on the plane.
Boeing do not do cabin reconfiguration, they are farm out to other company, especially this should be a BBJ purchase (which handle executive purchase). BBJ were delivered to customer with a customable interior (Ie, blank interior), and the customer will need to find their own company/contractor to do them. I know that because The firm I used to work bought a few BBJ and ABJ (Airbus Business Jet) I know for a fact some ABJ were reconfigure by Avianor not by Airbus themselves

Now, I don't really believe Chinese authority would not check for listening device when the jet rolled out of Boeing Factory and being accepted by the Chinese, because that is the easiest time to do it (With the plane bare). So chances are that was installed when the jet is being reconfigure by contractor. Found out who reconfigure the plane for China, and you will find where the bug is from.

Apart from that, the argument is still the same, you would expect some sort of intelligence will be done to it if you buy it from a country you are competing for. I mean, if US bought their Airforce One form Tupolev, I will expect the same.

The question is, could China make a passenger plane without Western Component?

I'm sure they knew the plane would be checked. Like the concern with Huawei the bugs probably only "came alive" with an over-the-air update to the entertainment system's software or something.

The different is, Boeing is a company that make both Civil and Military equipment and have substantial ties with the US Government, Huawei is a privately owned company who denied link to the Chinese Government.
