HYDERABAD, APRIL 23:
Global aircraft major Boeing is setting up a transonic wind tunnel facility in Hyderabad.

The facility, the first of its kind in the country and under ‘Defence offsets', could involve an expenditure of Rs 400-450 crore.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will use the facility for its research studies. It is expected to come up in 3-4 years, according to Mr K.V.R. Murthy, Integrated Financial Advisor, DRDO.

A wind tunnel is an enclosure that is equipped to test the aerodynamic features of various aircraft shapes. It can also test space vehicles.

A transonic tunnel is a high-speed tunnel that can generate speeds up to Mach 1.4 (Mach is the speed of sound).

OFFSET COMMITMENTS

The Defence Ministry's offset policy stipulates that a minimum of 30 per cent of the value of a large contract bagged by a foreign company or a consortium in Defence projects has to be sourced from lndia.

Boeing has the largest offset commitment in the country, according to Mr Dinesh S. Keskar, Senior Vice-President, Asia-Pacific & India sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

In a recent interaction with Business Line in Hyderabad, Mr Keskar said the company was active in the Defence and aerospace sectors and has collaborations with HAL, BEL, and the Tata group.

It is also looking at opportunities with companies that possess engineering expertise, such as Mahindras and L&T.

In the last five years Boeing has won a major contract to supply 68 aircraft to Air India. In 2009, the Government of India purchased eight Boeing P-81 long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft.

In June 2011, the Defence Ministry signed an agreement with the US Government to acquire 10 Boeing C17 Globemaster III airlifters. Some of these deals carry Defence offsets.

HYPERSONIC TUNNEL

The DRDO is also in the process of setting up its own Rs 350-crore Hypersonic Wind Tunnel facility, also in Hyderabad.

At present the country has only one wind tunnel facility at the National Aerospace Laboratory, Bangalore, which is 40 years old. This will also be upgraded, Mr Murthy said.

HAL has one , ISRO too and even the IIT's have a few... Could anyone share some light on it? or is it only one hypersonic wind tunnel facility?

.
This is old news....i am not sure why hasn't the work on transonic wind tunnel hasn't started yet ? I just hope its not about the land problem...:cheesy:

.
Defence offsets --- This seems to be the new mantra for defense related deals made by India off late ,and it surely is helping too

Huh!!A very old news. This is nothing but a big scam!!A BIG F*C*ING SCAM in which both the MoD and Boeing are involved. In this case the MoD has clearly bent itself backwards to soften the offset policy. The MoD could have held its nerve and asked for some cutting edge technology instead of this 'trans sonic tunnel' BS.You guys probably don't believe me but this is a 50's technology.Even L&T has built a Mach 12 Wind Tunnel for ISRO.

any source on the LnT claim you made mate?

I am sure then LnT can help drdo also....but a thing is they are heavy engineering industry plus a big private sector conglomerate...Its not entirely impossible but very slim chance.

undoubtedly they can help . but one first has to have the technology to build it . as far as i know we do not have this tech . (i could be wrong as i an not an expert on the subject)
hence i asked for a source as to where he got his info.:)

. . .
Wow. Good news.
And L&T helping ISRO ....... That's what needed in India right now. Public-Private dual.

. .
That Boeing deal is a scam. That tri-sonic thing is bullsh*t which our industry can build itself. Total waste of offset policy.

Also it was supposed to ready by now. Boeing is lazy as usual. They must be asking for bigger land, I bet or some stupidconditions again to delay things. They delayed LCA in similar way, first comitted for consultancy then backed out after sittingo n proposal for 2 years.

That technology is so backward that even pakistan can build it within 3 months right away.

.
I thought the uniqueness of this facility, in India, was it was a HIGH-ALTITUDE testing facility and not purely to do with speed.

.
No buddy, this facility was never meant to be a high altitude test facility but just a plain simple Transonic Wind Tunnel facility.
