Boeing’s latest sixth-gen fighter concept is a tail-less canard

Boeing is unveiling an updated version of its F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter concept at the Navy League’s Sea-Air-Space Exposition in Washington DC this week.

The tail-less twin-engine stealth fighter design comes in “manned and unmanned options as possibilities per the US Navy,” Boeing says. The design features diverterless supersonic inlets reminiscent of those found on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The Boeing concept also features canards, which is somewhat of a surprise because the motion of those forward mounted control surfaces is generally assumed to compromise a stealth aircraft’s frontal radar cross-section. But the lack of vertical tail surfaces suggests the aircraft would be optimized for all-aspect broadband stealth, which would be needed for operations in the most challenging anti-access/area denial environments.

Also of note in the manned version of the company’s F/A-XX concept is the placement of the cockpit-rearward visibility appears to be restricted without the aid of a sensor apparatus similar to the F-35′s distributed aperture system of six infrared cameras.

The Boeing F/A-XX concept is a response to a USN request for information (RFI) from April 2012 soliciting data for a replacement for the service’s Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler fleets in the 2030s. The Super Hornet fleet is expected to start reaching the end of the jet’s 9000h useful lifespan during that time period.

“The intent of this research is to solicit industry inputs on candidate solutions for CVN [nuclear-powered aircraft carrier] based aircraft to provide air supremacy with a multi-role strike capability in an anti-access/area denied (A2AD) operational environment,” the navy RFI stated. “Primary missions include, but are not limited to, air warfare (AW), strike warfare (STW), surface warfare (SUW), and close air support (CAS).”

Navy leaders had said at the time that they expect any new F/A-XX design to have greatly increased range and offer far superior kinematic performance compared to existing tactical aircraft.

Looks supercool..

this link says it'll have self healing structure..:woot:

Sixth generation fighter aircraft: rise of the F/A-XX - Airforce Technology

. . .
nuclear powered and it got all kind of rocket factory inside.. so it can fly for years and drop bomb countless :chilli:

.
Looks awsome , but it seems as some more high tech designs the US is using they seem to carry a lesser wepons payload just my thought.

. .
when countries are struggling to get 5th gen tech they already started research on 6th gen??

.
Well to be honest, only US is struggling with regards to 5th gen fighters. They seem to have made it, but no money to maintain a significant amount of squadrons for it.

The Russians/Chinese do seem to be making and without worries of maintaining the squadrons.

I think this is the last generation the fighter pilot would keep his job. 7th Gen on wards, pilots will be a rare thing.

Really? How many squadrons do the Russians and the Chinese have? 0? Thought so....

. .
Other nations are just playin catchup, most are still working on 5th generation planes to try and match the F22 so it should come as no surprise that Boeing and other companies are working on 6th generation plus tech.

Lets talk about what features are likely to be "wanted" and "doable" for such a system, in such a timeline.. I know funding is scarce, but if the USN plays it smart, they will go with RFP's and positioning themselves strategically when it comes to developing key technology that once mature, could lead them to go ahead and start an official program in the next 4-5 years...

In my opinion, USN will likely ask for a Fast, Supercruising, VLO asset that has SIGNIFICANT Electronic attack capability.

The major thrust for funding would not be required at this stage. The USN has to look and sit on the RFP's in order to develop a strategy for the next phase, meanwhile the engine technology required is all ready being developed and tested as we speak in separate programs that are fully funded (Quarter of a billion Development dollars alone in 2012)..

It has also be widely reported that the avionics for the LRS-B will build on those on the F-22/F-35 so you all ready have a program in place to build up on that technology..Therefore the major PUSH IN FUNDING early on, to get the systems in place may not be required very early on, as those things are taken care off. If launched major funding would probably have to start around 2020-2022 when they start to down select candidates and think about having a fly-off. Uptil that very little money would be required to advance the program in addition to that which has all ready been planned.

And i really wonder what wil be its Fuel .Say by 2050 or so .May be Solar or Hybrid Engine or Air Propultion system ?

Yeah but Bigger one. So what about pakistan's 6th Gen :toast_sign:
