Warning for man accused over airport breast X-ray
(AFP) – 1 hour ago

LONDON — Police said Wednesday they have warned an airport worker who reportedly made a crude remark about a colleague's breasts as a newly-installed security scanner took a full body X-ray of her.

Jo Margetson, 29, walked into an X-ray machine at London's Heathrow Airport by mistake before the incident allegedly took place -- and told The Sun newspaper she is now "totally traumatised".

The reported incident, the first such complaint since the machines were introduced earlier this year, has highlighted privacy concerns about the use of full body scanners at British airports.

Heathrow and Manchester airports has been using them since an alleged bid to blow up a US-bound jet on Christmas Day was foiled, while the US and The Netherlands are among other countries where they are being installed.

When asked about the story, a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police said: "Police received an allegation regarding an incident that happened at Heathrow Terminal 5 on March 10.

"A first instance harassment warning has been issued to a 25-year-old male."

Airports operator BAA, which runs Heathrow, added that it was investigating the allegations.

"If these claims are found to be substantiated, we will take appropriate action," a spokesman added.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has warned the government that the scanners could run counter to the right to privacy enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights.

"When privacy-invading machines like these are installed at our airports, abuses like this are inevitable," said Alex Deane of campaign group Big Brother Watch.

An absolute necessary in the times we live in. But having said that, people should be a little sensitive in addressing the issue.

If a patient can be seen by a Doctor irrespective of the gender difference, a person can also be scanned for an appropriate reason. All the authorities have to do is to have designated scanners for female and male passengers only operated by females or males respectively. Yes, this is an issue, but the issue has to be tackled in a logical and professional manner.

Contrary to the popular myth, the scanners do not take images to a resolution where each and every curve of the body would be visible, as this is not the purpose of these scanners. The scan exposes potentially deadly contraband, from metallic weapons to powder or plastic explosives, planted on individuals or inside folds of skin. True that most obvious parts such as breasts, buttocks etc are visible, but pardon me to say that I have seen (you must have also) fully dressed women with their breasts and buttocks as much exposed as they could be. No, I am not saying that this justifies X-ray body scans, but for the safety and security of a flight, this is not totally unacceptable.

Sets up committee to probe issue

By Rauf Klasra

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani blocked a multi-million-dollar deal to buy faulty scanners from China, after his ministers in the cabinet meeting here on Wednesday blasted the contract. It was also disclosed that the equipment was being purchased at 20 per cent higher rates than the market and would cause a possible loss of $12 million in the first phase of their import and installation. The News had also exposed the shady deal in its issue of March 23.

A sombre prime minister is said to have remarked that “something was wrong somewhere” in the whole deal and announced to form a committee of three federal ministers to probe the deal and submit a report to the cabinet. The committee, comprises Law Minister Dr Babar Awan, Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Adviser for Finance Dr Hafeez Sheikh.

The committee has been asked to review the deal signed with the Chinese party and to give its own suggestions after it was pointed out in the cabinet meeting that three important departments and ministries had warned against the purchase of these scanners but the warnings were ignored. The cabinet members wondered as to how and why Baboos made official trips to China, at the taxpayers expense, for inspection of the equipment with disappointing results.

Under the agreement, in the first phase, China was supposed to give a loan of $71 million to buy the scanners and in the second phase, another consignment of similar amount was to be imported. The cabinet members, who spoke in the meeting against the deal, were at a loss to know as to how could the order be placed when an official report prepared by experts had given a negative report.

Prime Minister Gilani observed he smelt something foul as even the official summary stipulated that an order to buy the scanners would be placed if the pilot project yielded desired results. The prime minister said now they had come to know that the pilot project did not give the required results, so why they were placing the order.

The sources said Prime Minister Gilani rejected the briefing given by the Interior Ministry on this issue and decided to form a committee to probe the whole issue and report to the cabinet whether to import the equipment or not.

We need body scanners but they should only let females scan female passengers and males scan male passengers. I don't know why they haven't thought of it yet. Here in the U.S. only male police officers can search males and only female police officers can search females.
