The new warship of Bangladesh Navy, procured from the USA, named ‘BNS Somudra Avijan’ reached the Chittagong naval jetty on Saturday, according to an ISPR press release.

The USA coastguard handed over the ship to Bangladesh Navy formally on May 5 this year.

The Bangladesh Navy welcomed the new member of its fleet with its traditional ceremony that was attended by Commander of the Chittagong Naval Area Rear Admiral Akhtar Habib.

The high-powered curter ship was commissioned under the USA coastguard on November 16 in 1968.

In February 3, 2015, the USA coastguard decommissioned the ship.

The 115 meters long and 13 meters width ship with speed of 29 nautical miles is included in the 9th frigate squadron of Bangladesh Navy.

Twenty-one officers and 157 sailors of Bangladesh Navy went to the USA in different phases and received practical training about different features of the ship.

After receiving the training, Captain M Wasim Maksud sailed the Somudra Avijan from the USA on October 11, 2015 and reached Chittagong after stopping over in Malaysia and the Philippines.- DH.

By the way at OP. When you call a ship name in front of a USCG prefix, the Official name should be USCGS (United States Coast Guard Service) USCGC (United State Coast Guard Cutter) Would need to follow the WHEC-723 designation. So You can either call this ship

USCGS Rush or
USCGC (WHEC-723) Rush or
USCGC Rush (WHEC-723)

I already did that long ago.....since its also the same class that Philippine navy also got.

But I mean of specific BN Navy colours/use right now.

This is the 2nd Hamilton Class Cutter transfer to Bangladesh Navy by the USCG, the first one is USCGS Jarvis, transferred to BN service in 2013, this is the second ship in class type that BN got.

Bangladesh hope to turn these 2 cutter into Guided Missile Frigate, which will entail to remove the US Mk92 FCS and install Chinese FCS as well as Shipborne Radar in order to use C-802 and FM-90 Missile from China, the AN/SPS 40 may or may not left on broad, and BN will start the overhaul once they received both ship.

India should look to transfer INS Godaveri to BD after it is decommissioned. Heard its in process as its AIR Defences were put into Vikramaditya

We ain't that cheap that we need to buy over three decades decades old Indian stuff. If we want used stuff, we can go for US' or European.

INS Godaveri is a destroyer. Russian built. Has capabilities that even the best of BD ships cant match. And as a token of friendship India can give it to BD.
Atleast Coast Guard ships is the one u will get from USA or Europe for Begging. Beggars cannot be choosers.
As friends we want to share the best of things, but if u want to beg, pls cry to continue

Chinese frigates are better than Indian destroyers.

Beggars don't go to beggars for begging. Yes, I am referring to India. The total number of people under poverty line in India is much greater than the population of Bangladesh.

No its not. Latest WB approved figures show 12.4 % absolute poverty rate (by 1.25 PPP measure for 2011). Bangladesh poverty rate even by the old measure (of 21% for India) has always been much higher than India as a % (generally double depending on the source). With 12.4% (and assuming that rate has held constant to 2015 which would not be the case), that number means about 150 million absolutely poor people....definitely less than the population of Bangladesh which is about 170 million people now. Plus, the other side of the coin is that more than 1.1 billion people are not absolutely poor now in India....about 6.5 times the entire population of Bangladesh.

World Bank estimates show fall in India’s poverty rate - The Hindu

Since 2015 is the target year for the Millennium Development Goals, the assessment of changes in poverty over time is best based on the Uniform Reference Period (URP) consumption method, which uses a 30-day recall period for calculating consumption expenditures, as per the report. This method, used to set the baseline poverty rates for India in 1990, shows India’s poverty rate for 2011/12 to be 21.2 per cent.

By comparison, the Modified Mixed Reference Period (MMRP), which contains a shorter, seven-day recall period for some food items leads to higher estimates of consumption and therefore lower poverty estimates. “We expect that the MMRP-based estimate (currently at 12.4% for India) will set the baseline for India and global poverty estimates, going forward,” a World Bank spokesperson told The Hindu.

More country specific details will be available once the Global Monitoring Report, using the new estimates, is launched in Washington DC on October 7.

@Bad Guy, your report being used bro :)

Bangladesh's poverty line is greater than that of India. Because in our country not being able to afford 3 meals a day is considered poor.

In Bangladesh if you earn less than $2, you are considered poor. Our poverty population is 17.6%

Read this:
Internationally, an income of less than $1.90 per day per head of purchasing power parity is defined as extreme poverty. By this estimate, about 32.7% percent of Indians are extremely poor. Income-based poverty lines consider the bare minimum income to provide basic food requirements; it does not account for other essentials such as health care and education
Below Poverty Line (India) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And even if you say yours is 12.4%, compared to ours 17.6% and according to that certain someone who called us beggars, you aren't much better off than us. Thus, it also makes you guys beggars too.

Oie, Saffron betta aka RSS and BJP, Jamaat doesn't go around and kill off its minorities unlike your PM Modi.

I am talking about standardised measurements by a neutral organisation (World Bank)....not a national poverty definition.

Where is your source for this 17.6% claim? Its certainly not from the World Bank.

From the World Bank global monitoring report 2015:

ppudjIs.jpg

Poverty & Equity Data | India | The World Bank

Poverty & Equity Data | Bangladesh | The World Bank

India:

Poverty headcount ratio at $1.90 a day (2011 PPP) (% of population)

31.4% (2009) 21.3% (2011)

Bangladesh:

Poverty headcount ratio at $1.90 a day (2011 PPP) (% of population)

51.6% (2005) 43.7% (2010)

The figure of 32.7% seems to be from the 2009 data of the World Bank. By 2011, it has already dropped to 21.3% and is now soon going to be revised to 12.4% by the World Bank itself (if you read the earlier report I posted).

And even if you say yours is 12.4%, compared to ours 17.6% and according to that certain someone who called us beggars, you aren't much better off than us. Thus, it also makes you guys beggars too.

Again you need to provide a source for you 17.6% claim like I have via the World Bank. All international organisations list Bangaldeshi poverty much much higher than India's by any consumption norm (be it 1 dollar PPP, 1.25, 1.9, 2, 5 you name it).

But let me see where you got this number from, and whether its from a standardised, international, neutral and reputable source so that we can actually compare apples to apples.

BTW I am not in the business of calling anyone or any nation "beggar". You dont need to address me on that point.

1. We don't use and will probably never use indian made defence equipment either used or new, its a defence policy.

2. In less then a year the navy will recieve 2 new type 056 corvettes currently undergoing sea trials.

3. By 2018-2020 Khulna Shipyards will be building the type 056 in Bangladesh.

4. Money has already been allocated to buy 2 new frigates from either China or Korea.

So in other words thanks but no thanks.
