Dhaka, June 17 (UNB) - BNP-Jamaat backed candidates won 11 chairman posts and Awami League (AL) backed candidates bagged six posts in 17 union parishad elections of Chandpur and Joypurhat held on Thursday.

UNB Chandpur Correspondent said: BNP-Jamaat backed candidates won six chairman posts while AL backed candidates won four posts in 10 union parishad elections in Shahrasti upazila.

There were 71 candidates for the post of chairman in 10 unions in Shahrasti upazila. There was no female candidate for the post of chairman.

According to the unofficial results declared by UNO and Returning officer Ayatul Islam, six chairman candidates having link to BNP and Jamaat were elected chairman while AL backed candidates bagged four post.

In Joypurhat, BNP-backed candidates won five chairman posts while AL-backed candidates got two posts in seven union parishad polls in Khetlal and Akkelpur upazilas.

Followings are the chairmen declared elected from unofficial results:

Khetlal upazila

Alampur UP- Gaziul Haque Shablu (BNP).
Mamudpur UP- Sharful Islam Talukder Tota (BNP).

Akkelpur upazila

Rambkindipur UP - Golam Mahfuz Chowdhury (AL).
Sonamukhi UP - Solaiman Ali (BNP).
Gopinathpur UP - Abu Sayed Chowdhury Joarder (AL).
Raikali UP - Shahinur Rahman Shahin (BNP).
Tilakpur UP -Azhar Ali Dulu (BNP).

Chairman candidates backed by AL sweep Barisal Div UP polls


Barisal, Apr 02 (UNB) - Union parishad (UP) elections were held peacefully in 49 unions in seven upazilas (UZ) of four coastal districts of Barisal division barring some stray incidents on Saturday. Meanwhile, chairmen candidates backed by ruling Awami League have won in 123 UPs posts out of 191 in Barisal division since polls to the lowest rung of local government began in 12 districts of three divisions in coastal belt on Tuesday (March 29).
Divisional election office sources said 123 chairmen candidates backed by AL, 52 backed by main opposition party BNP, two backed by Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad), five backed by JP (JP-Manju), one backed by CPB, one backed by Jamaat-e-Islami, one backed by Islami Shashantantra Andolon and six independent candidates declared winners unofficially from March 29 to April 1 (Friday).
Polls were held in 13 unions in four districts of Barisal division on Friday.

According to the unofficial results of nine UPs in two UZs of Pirojpur and Patuakhali districts, AL backed chairmen candidates won in two UPs in Nazirpur UZ of Pirojpur and two in Kalapara in Patuakhali, while BNP backed candidates bagged three in Nazirpur and two in Kalapara.

Results of four other UPs in three other districts of the division including Farashganj UP of Lalmohan UZ, Baro Mainkka UP in Borhanuddin UZ under Bhola district, Sadar UP under Rajapur UZ of Jhalakathi district and Dhulia UP of Bakerganj UZ of Barisal, were withheld and not yet published.

5 chairmen unofficially declared elected in Pirojpur UP polls



Pirojpur, Apr 1(UNB) - The elections to five Union Parishads were held Friday in Nazirpur upazila.

The winning chairmen are: Faisal Alam Ranzu of Matibhanga (BNP), Sumon Mandal Mithu of Malikhali (AL), Touhidul Islam of Shekhmatia (BNP), Anowar Hossain Sikder of Nazirpur (BNP) and Akteruzzaman Gaus of Shakharikathi (AL).

In some cases Jamaats doing better than Awami league. Even the elections that happened few months was dominated by BNP. In that election, many of the awami league contestants tried to cheat their way through and still lost the election.

3 killed in UP polls violence

A man was killed in Matlab Dakshin Upazila of Chandpur when police opened fire on ballot box snatchers while another was chopped to death in Kalkini Upazila of Madaripur on the day of Union Parishad elections Sunday.

In a post-poll violence in Rajbari, a 20-year-old HSC examinee, who was a supporter of a defeated chairman candidate, was shot dead Sunday morning by the supporters of the victorious candidate.

Our correspondent identified the Chandpur victim as Abu Yusuf alias Mona, 28, son of one Matin Baidya of Nayergaon Dakshin UP in Matlab Dakshin Upazila.

Meanwhile, the other victim has been identified as Mohabbat Ali Sarder, 60, a resident of Notun Char Doulatkhan village in the Kalkini Upazila of Madaripur.

Chandpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Shahidullah Chowdhury told The Daily Star that the supporters of Abul Hossain, a chairman candidate of Nayergaon Dakshin UP, stormed in Kaliaish Government Primary School polling centre and tried to snatch ballot boxes at 10:30am......

However, the election in Char Doulatkhan, along with 13 other UPs of Kalkini Upazila, began at 8:00am.

Meanwhile, at least 50 people, including Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rajoir Police Station, were injured in a clash between villagers of two unions, Rajoir Sadar and Badarpasha, at Rajoir upazila in the district.

The clash started at about 12:00pm and continued till filing of this report at about 3:00pm.

MA Mannan, assistant superintendent of police of Rajbari, told The Daily Star that the supporters of winner Abul Kashem Sarowar of Babupara UP elections shot at the supporters of defeated Iman Sarder between 6:00am and 7:00am, leaving three people injured.

Momin succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital, the police officer told our correspondent in Faridpur.

Of the injured -- Aynal, son of Iman Sarder, was admitted to Pangsha Upazila Health Complex, while Abu Hasnat Raju, a nephew of Iman Sarder, was taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

A group of people led by Sahidul Mia, Bhantu and Ismail fired gunshots at Hazrapara village at around 7:00am, leaving the three injured, Raju told The Daily Star.

The same group Saturday night also ransacked the houses of Iman Sarder’s supporters after the results were announced, Raju claimed.
