As the carrot has failed there is something to be said for employing the stick. This isn't bloodlust, by the way, any more than Sherman's devastating but bloodless march through the South was. The point is to hammer in that the material success that Muslims worship and enjoy in Gaza is ultimately dependent on Israeli goodwill - goodwill which the Gazans have abused and deceived themselves about.

Nevertheless to complete the punishment changes would have to be made to Gazans' schools and trade. Plus Israel, in this scenario, should receive some form of material compensation from the Gazans - though what that could be, I don't know.

All in all this approach - while shocking to many - has proven quite effective in the past at subduing areas where the entire population is the problem, not just its tyrannical regime.

We will see if Hamas and the Palestinians possess the wisdom to avoid this fate.

In an important sense, the conflict isn't just between peoples but relationships based on law and justice vs. the raw balance of strength moderated by familiar relationships that is the rule between Arabs.

There's never been a carrot to Gaza -- there's only been continual shelling, destruction of infrastracture, siege, and arbitrary constraints on freedom of movement and on life. That's why Israel has been under its own measure of shelling, alberit one much more limited than the one with which it castigates Gaza. And by God, there will continue to be such shelling. It will because Palestinians are not like Jews -- Palestinians have never been a people to submit, to cower, to immigrate and to run away: they're instead a people of staying put and fighting back, and as long as there's an oppressive Israel there will be a Palestinian fighter.

You're such the stereotypical Jew: even while your army bombs homes, destroys wells, brings down schools, media centers and hospitals -- you can never let the mind off the pocket, can't you? Israel hasn't paid for all the things it has destroyed now, or those that it brought down in has destroyed before -- in Operation Cast Lead, for example. It hasn't paid for the wells, the homes, the hospitals, the ambulances, or the schools it intentionally blew up. It receives a lot of money from abroad, but none of it Israel uses to aid the victims of its own war crimes. Where's the carrt, then?

ANd why should Palestinians, who have received far more damage than caused it, compensate for a thing -- they who are already blockaded, unemployed, food insecure, because of Israel's siege and perpetual shelling of Gaza? Grow a heart and a head, you. Israelis aren't the only ones suffering, and they aren't even close to being the ones suffering the most.

Israel's invincible and its shelling of babies is justified to establish deterrence!

Minds smarter and more learned than yours have argued for the exact opposite: Israel likes to claim a deterrence against an enemy, where none exists, or where it is a mutual deterrence that hs been achieved. Hamas shelling on Israel decreased after Operation Cast Lead, true, but so did Israeli shelling of Gaza. Even worse in Lebanon: it appears that a unilaterial deterrence has been achieved, one by Hezbollah against Israel.

As a matter of curiousity, no trolling or offence intended, do Pakistanis , Bangladeshis etc support Hamas and condemn Israel because they see Israel as an aggressor against Muslims or do they delve into the real issues before leaping to condemnation of Israel? I ask this since I haven't noticed any outright condemnation of the slaughter of Muslims in countries such as Syria etc by members here as the outright and immediate condemnation of Israel when it comes to the Palestine issue

You are the one whose first thought in the head, as a reaction to your bombing of a people who have already lost relatives, schools, hospitals, ambulances, as well as subsistence means to your mad dog-like attacks, is to ask them for their money -- they who have already been left unemployed and food insecure because of siege of their country. Journalist, Gilad Sharon, the son of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, in an editorial in the Jerusalem Post on Sunday called for Gaza to be flattened like the US flattened the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945 with an atomic bomb.

“We need to flatten all of Gaza. The American’s didn’t stop with Hiroshima – the Japanese weren’t surrendering fast enough – so they hit Nagasaki too. There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they’d really call for a ceasefire,” ranted Sharon.
