Army said no to Gujral’s order to vacate Siachen

Sorry to ask this but can you really blame the Indian Army for their supposed 'stubbornness'??If they do agree to demilitarize the glacier and vacate its its posts over the Saltoro ridge, Who's to guarantee that a a second Kargil won't take place??The credibility of the Pakistani Armed forces in this regard isn't really world renowned to put it gently.

Nothing new here.Neither side is doing any good in Saichen. The biggest enemy up there is the cold itself.

. . .
Seen upclose, its like living in colour less (white) hell.
Its a test of physical power as well as mental strength. The silence and sound of wind haunts you for long at back of your mind. Cold kills you without even you realizing it. At times troopers go to sleep and then never wakes up, dies while asleep. Not taking bath for months and nothing to make you feel fresh. Going to loo or pee is another herculean task.

PAKISTANIS

Have tried covert operations for over two decades and hundreds of Pakistani soldiers have died.

MOST OF THESE OPERATIONS HAVE BEEN PLACED IN SECR5ET WAR LOCKERS

This is an account by Lt Gen Chandra Shekhar who retired as VCOAS.

Quote:
...in March 1991, when I was posted out to HQ 15 Corps as the Chief of Staff (COS)

....

I recall an incident in the Siachin sector of 3 Inf Div when I was officiating as the Corps Commander. The Divisional Commander, Major General JS Dhillon, reported that a Pak Helicopter had violated our air-space in the central Glacier in the ‘Bahadur Complex’ and recommended that we should engage the helicopter should it repeat the intrusion. I approved the action and asked him to redeploy the ‘Igla’ missile and informed the HQ Northern Command of our plans, as it appeared a deliberate violation. The GOC reinforced the post with an ‘Igla’ missile and undertook suitable measures. The enemy helicopter came again and flew over the post and was engaged. It was shot down, and besides the pilot, we found it also had on board the opposing Brigade Commander and an SO, all of whose bodies were recovered. There was the obvious protest from Pakistan through the DGMO, and the obvious inquiries from the MoD. Since I had already informed the higher HQ of our proposed action, we were on a sound wicket within our agreement of the AGPL.

The helicopter intrusion by Pakistan had been preceded by heavy artillery fire, followed by assaulting infantry. The alertness of the post-commander and the quick retaliation by our artillery and mortar fire not only repulsed the attack, but left many of the enemy dead on the slopes. We allowed the enemy to retrieve their dead, including their Brigade Commander, once such instructions were received from HQ Northern Command and the DGMO. The Indian Army while remaining committed to the defence of the country to the last breath and to the welfare of its fighting force, is also committed to values of honour towards the foe, and this quality is something we should recognise and be proud of.

....

Was able to correlate some titbits with PA list of KIA. This incident is as big as they come, judging by the size of the list here ...

Looks like indians getting desperate and want to get out of Siachen freeze. Not gonna happen we are happy to see u guys freeze on the glacier. Pakistan has easy access and is very comfortable unlike the indians.

In a rare revelation, Pakistan has officially come out with details of the battle casualties it suffered in various operations from 2003-10. This include deployments on the Indian border as well as its fight against militants on the Afghan border. One figure that stands out in this period - which coincides with a ceasefire agreement that meant no firing on the border - is that the Pakistan Army has been suffering huge fatal casualties on the Siachen glacier, the highest battlefield in the world without a shot being fired.
Bleeding in Siachen: Pakistan losing 30 soldiers a year on highest battlefield - The Economic Times
Despite a ceasefire that has seen no targeted firing since a 2003 agreement, the Pakistan Army has been losing an average of 30 soldiers a year on Siachen. The deaths are associated with the perils of deployment at high altitude - medical complications, avalanches, bad weather and more. With a total of 213 deaths recorded at Siachen between 2003-10, the glacier has been taking its toll. The average of 30 deaths a year does not include the 140 soldiers that Pakistan lost in a fatal avalanche that hit a military camp in April 2012.

On the other hand, Indian casualties on glacier have progressively decreased over the years and are currently in single digits. Official data released in parliament shows that Indian soldiers have died due to climatic conditions at an average of 10 a year. In recent years this number has almost come down to single digits, with 5 soldiers lost this year, six in 2014 and ten in 2013. This despite the fact that the Indian Army is manning higher posts and is deployed across the length and breadth of the glacier, unlike Pakistan that is restricted to the mountains surrounding the area. In both 2007 and 2008 for example, the Indian army suffered four fatal casualties. Correspondingly, the Pakistan Army lost 13 in 2008 and 12 in 2007 in the Siachen region.

The difference in casualties between the two nations is attributed by the Army on better equipment, resources, training and medical facilities on the Indian side. Indian Army officers who have served on the glacier say that a strictly followed acclimatization procedure, along with standard operating procedures that are implemented sternly have brought down casualties. The laying down of a kerosene line on the glacier, as well as the procurement of pre fabricated huts and better clothing has reduced deaths due to the bone chilling cold. Lt Gen Ata Hasnain (retd), says that one of the success stories of DRDO has been on high altitude research and the medicine and material they have put together for the glacier is saving lives.

Does Pakistan Army, Navy and Airforce has plans to reduce its number of men? Like China and others?

I think PAF should deploy drones and P-3C AEW&Cs like aircraft in these areas along with new generation Spada-2000 systems to handle the situation.

Thats your miscalculation, Surviving on Siachen made india to develop an industry and a system that exists no where in the world. Right now we have the best high altitude warfare courses, best high altitude warfare support system developed along with it we have now learnt how conquer the high altitude actions. The way entire Siachen glacier position is maintained is itself a course study material. The logistics, the food, the acclimatization and building of troper for high altitude action has provided India an ability to fight inroads on high altitude war with ability to strengthen its position without much of losses. For the cost of maintaining siachen a small country could probably operate its entire airforce.

Reading about siachen is probably just 5% of what its really being at siachen.

what about number of suicides committed by Indian army officers & jawans? do share those articles as well.

here is one link. & i'm posting an Indian link since rest of the world is biased. 597 military personnel committed suicides in 5 years, staggering figure.

Were those suicides committed in Siachen?

If not, then you post is irrelevant to the thread on Siachen casualties.

If not, then you post is irrelevant to the thread on Siachen casualties.

Includes officers & Jawans from J&K/North Eastern India. Read the article. "mental stress" caused due to deployment in J&K area is one of the reason for Suicides & killing of fellow soldiers.

597 non-combatant killing, in 5 years, isn't a small figure! Most of the suicides are reported from J&K.
