ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — At least three soldiers were killed and 11 were wounded in a possible suicide attack in the Pakistani-controlled part of the disputed Kashmir region on Wednesday, according to Pakistani officials and news media outlets.
The attack took place at 6:50 a.m. outside the barracks of a military residential compound in Tararr Khal area of Rawalakot District, a picturesque valley along the border with India.
There was no claim of responsibility and Pakistani Army officials did not immediately comment on the nature of the blast.
“It is not clear whether it was a suicide attack or a remote controlled device,” a Pakistani Army spokesperson said. “We are vetting the information.”
But local news media reported that the explosion took place when a suicide bomber was stopped from entering into the military compound.
Both India and Pakistan claim the Himalayan region of Kashmir in its entirety and have fought wars over it. The Pakistan Army maintains a strong presence in the part of Kashmir under its control.
Suicide attacks here, unlike the rest of Pakistan, were unheard of until recently, local politicians said.
“I think this is the first time that we have found that terrorists have a network in Kashmir”, Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, a former prime minister and currently a member of the legislative assembly of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, said in an interview. “Otherwise, Kashmir has been comparatively peaceful with no major law and order situation. But there have been three attacks in the last three months. This is a very alarming situation.”
“The attacks seem to be an extension of what is happening in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” Mr. Chaudhry said. the Pakistani Army is battling militants in the country’s northwest and reprisal attacks have targeted civilian and military targets across major Pakistani cities.
The spate of attacks in Kashmir suggest that the militants are stretching even farther.
Late last month, five people were killed in a suicide attack on Shiite Muslims in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.
Mr. Chaudhry speculated that the militants had managed to develop networks within the Pashtun community.
“We have a lot of people from the Frontier who are working in the markets of Kashmir by setting up stores,” he said, referring to North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. “They have been living for the past many years and are peaceful but once people are there, then one can find the network as well.”

May the 3 soldiers rest in peace.
Nothing suggests that it was a suicide attack, however talking about Kashmir, there is also a firefight underway in Srinagar with many casualties.
