Blast kills bomb disposal expert, two others in Peshawar

A roadside remote-controlled bomb blast in Peshawar Monday killed three personnel of the bomb disposal unit (BDU) who were on their way to defuse another bomb elsewhere in the city, DawnNews reported.

Police officer Shahid Khan says the attack took place in the Sheikh Mohammadi area of Badhber and targeted the vehicle of the BDU.

Three personnel — BDU in-charge and sub-inspector Abdul Haq, constable Imtiaz and the driver of the vehicle Kashif — were killed in the blast.

Two people, including BDU official Aminul Haq and a pedestrian, were injured in the explosion.

The injured persons were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital. According to the hospital administration, Aminul Haq's condition was critical.

Shafqat Malik, bomb disposal chief for the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, praised Haq as one of his best and most professional operatives.

“We are losing our best officers. More than 10 officers of BDS (bomb disposal squad) have lost their lives while serving their motherland,” Malik said.

Haq was made bomb disposal chief for Peshawar after his predecessor Hukam Khan was killed while defusing two bombs in the same area in September 2012.

Police and other security personnel have cordoned off the Sheikh Mohammadi area and another bomb, containing four kilograms of explosive materials, was defused after a search operation that identified it went underway.

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, lies on the edge of Pakistan's tribal areas which have been labelled by Washington as the main sanctuary for Al Qaeda and Taliban militants in the country.

The city has seen frequent attacks by militants in the past few years, with targets ranging from civilians to policemen and other law enforcement personnel.

PESHAWAR: A remote-controlled blast on Sheikh Muhammadi Road in Peshawar killed four Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) personnel and seriously injured another person on Monday.

Sub-inspector Abdul Haq, head constable Imtiaz, Aminul Haq and their driver Kashif were among the deceased. The injured civilian was identified as Nazaul Haq.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, BDU Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Shafqat Malik said that their team was going to inspect the site of a blast in a motorcycle workshop which occurred last night when a road side bomb exploded, killing three personnel on the spot.

The injured were taken to Lady Reading Hospital.

Police found the remote used in the attack around 15 meters away from the site of the explosion during a search operation.

“It is a great loss but our morale is high and BDU will continue its duty in the on-going war on terror,” Malik said, adding that they only had 34 qualified and trained employees in the province who were overburdened, but were trying to increase the number of personnel and ensure their presence in all 25 districts in the province.

The last rites of the deceased personnel were offered in Malik Saad Police Lines with a guard of honor attended by the governor and other police officials. The bodies were sent to their ancestral towns for burial.

Previous blasts

On November 16, two people including a police officer were injured in a roadside blast on Kohat Road in Peshawar. The blast had taken place near a police mobile which was on its routine patrol. According to BDS, four to five kilogrammes of explosives were used in the blast.

On November 13, an Army convoy had escaped unhurt in a remote controlled road side bomb blast on Ring Road in Peshawar. The convoy was on its way from Hayatabad to Kohat Road. The explosion, however, had occurred when the convoy had passed and there was no damage or loss of life in the attack. The BDS had inspected the site of the explosion and said that it was a home-made low intensity device of around one kilogram.

On October 10, a blast in Achini area in Peshawar had left one person injured. A security forces vehicle was reportedly the target of the explosion. Unidentified persons had started blind firing after the blast.

On October 7, a remote-controlled bomb explosion in Peshawar had killed two police officers and injured eight others. The explosion took place near a hospital in the Budh Bher area of the city. The target of the blast was a police van which was providing security to a polio team.

TTP is getting more proficient in the use of remote detonation IEDs. Whilst not ideal, the provincial government should look at investing in GSM Jammers for BDS and RPF vehicles.

These are unsung heroes, who protect lives of ordinary citizens silently every day. It is sad that we hear about them when they give their lives in the line of duty. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the BDU officers killed in this targeted blast. Terrorists are working overtime to kill members of security forces. We saw them target police personal accompanying polio worker last week. Nothing can justify these attacks and killings, we all need to stand together and reject these terrorist and make no excuses for their heinous crimes. They day we do that, is the day these terrorists will cease to exit.
