Synopsis[edit]
The book details the rise of Blackwater USA, a private military company, and the growth of security contracting in the Iraq War and the War on Terrorism. In the book, Scahill contends that Blackwater exists as a mercenary force, and argues that Blackwater's rise is a consequence of the demobilisation of the US military following the Cold War and its overextension in Iraq and Afghanistan. He describes further how Blackwater (at the time of writing) serves in Iraq and Afghanistan like, in his judgement, a Praetorian Guard, protecting top authority figures and enjoying immunity from the usual constraints and regulations on traditional armies. Scahill argues that Blackwater's leadership was motivated by a right-wing Republican ideology, and that its founder, Erik Prince, has provided significant assistance in that venue. Blackwater is also present in some parts of Pakistan.

I can still recall how frantically they all left Peshawar after they were sent a msg by.....(I wud not use a name here) when two of their operatives were precisely taken out in Dir even when they were travelling along a convoy. They knew that it was end of them here. Didnt hear of them after that.

I don't know what narratives and bravado are sold to people in Peshawar but incidents like these do not scare Black Water. It is supposed to be operating in war-torn and unstable environments, providing security to VIPs in such regions. However, Peshawar is not a war-torn environment so Black Water should not be operating there.

Black Water's operations were increasingly controversial and getting too much publicity since 2007; that was part of the problem. The pressure mounted to the extent that Mike Pence stepped down and the company changed its identity.

In Peshawar, a suicide attack on the Pearl Continental Hotel, was a wake-up call for the Pakistani government. The suicide attack was aimed for the Black Water personnel staying in that hotel; 4 of them died. This may surprise you but among the dead, 2 were Pakistani nationals (Yes, Black Water hires professionals from all over the world, not just the US). Civilians were in real danger, becoming victims of cross-fire between agencies like Black Water and elements fighting them. This suicide attack changed the dynamics of how Black Water and/or similar companies would operate in Pakistani cities; they could not be turned into battlefields for the sake of security of some officials. The ensuing negotiations at the highest levels brought an end to Black Water's operations in the region in the aftermath.

At present, Black Water's activities are much more concealed and carefully executed in stable environments like Pakistan. You may never know if a foreigner or local you come across was a member of Black Water company at some point, or not.

Actually Black Water guys who was later named as Xi Services had hired Banglows in University Town area and anyone belonging to Peshawar would confirm it as they had been freely roaming out there, thanks to then Interior Minister Mr Malik.

No Sir it did not surprise me coz I already know how many locals were recruited in name of security services. Heck even their drivers, peon, cook etc were all locals who were given handsome salary. Regarding attack on PC Peshawar...I have my own story out there so I ll just keep mum as do not have the discretion to talk on that openly.

I had even seen these guys as trainers in FC Centre (just forgot the actual name the use for it) just in front of Deans Plaza Peshawar but they also had to leave when Gen Kiyani put an end to US trainers as it was bringing in more harm than intended fruits of training.

They fall in the category of military contractor and if U want to earn lots of money and that too tax free plus have immunity in maximum instances then one shud become a contractor for US military. And if can enlist a company as a contractor then your good days have just started. Ppl have literally become millionaires while working so.
