A black security guard who stopped a bar brawl was shot dead by a police officer who mistook him for a troublemaker. Jemel Roberson, 26, was gunned down at Manny’s Blue Room in Chicago Sunday, after breaking up the fight and standing over the aggressor with the gun he was permitted to carry as part of his job. But when an oficer from Midlothian Police Department arrived on the scene, they are said to have ignored shouts from other witnesses that Roberson was trying to keep the scene under control, and killed him anyway.

Adam Harris told Fox32: ‘The security guard that got killed, he caught somebody and had his knee on him the whole time. ‘Just waiting on the police to get there.
‘I guess when the police got there, they probably thought he was one of the bad guys, cause he had his gun on the guy and they shot him.’
Heartbreakingly, Roberson had hoped to become a police officer himself with his pastor Patricia Hill telling WGN: ‘The very people that he wanted to be family with took his life.’ Another pastor who knew Roberson told WLS that he was mystified by the part-time musician’s tragic killing.

He said: ‘How in the world does the security guard get shot by police?. ‘A young man that was literally doing his job and now he’s gone.’ A Midlothian PD spokesman told the Chicago Sun-Times that Illinois State Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding Roberson’s death. Their spokesman told the paper: ‘It is the policy of the Midlothian Police Department to utilize the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force for any officer-involved shootings so we can ensure transparency and maintain public trust.’
