The Congress on Saturday demanded that Prime Narendra Modi apologise to the country for the “insult” to Mahatma Gandhi by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra who termed Modi “desh ka baap” (Father of India) at a news channel show. The party asked the PM to “show courage” by expelling him, like the Congress expelled Mani Shankar Aiyar for his “neech aadmi” remark for Modi.

“They had the audacity to insult ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi. They can abuse and misbehave with us. We don’t have any objection. We will accept it as the test of democracy.”

“But on behalf of Congress party and 130 crore Indians I want to say, such insult of Mahatma Gandhi by BJP spokespersons won’t be tolerated by us. Now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is termed as ‘country’s father (desh ka baap)’,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala told reporters.

“Nobody ever had the audacity to insult the father of the nation in this manner. This is the same BJP which has dedicated a temple to Nathuram Godse (who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi) in Madhya Pradesh. A state BJP minister called Godse a Mahapurush,” he added.

Surjewala further said: “We demand Prime Minister should apologise to the country for the words used by the BJP spokesperson. Would PM show the courage, as Rahul Gandhi did (in case of Mani Shankar Aiyar), to expel him from the party. If he apologises, then we will praise him.

“..Else it would be proved that your spokesperson is not saying this, you (Modi) are making him say this..because you consider yourself larger than Mahatma Gandhi,” Surjewala added.

“We appeal to Modiji to expel him (Patra) from the BJP,” he said.

Malayali RJ who praised Kerala Muslim girls’ flash mob dance gets death threats, forced to apologise

RJ Sooraj, who recently put up a social media post appreciating the flash mob dance of three Muslim girls in Kerala’s Malappuram, was forced to apologise for his comments after he received several violent death threats by religious fundamentalists.

A few days ago, the video of three burqa-clad Muslim girls dancing on a popular Malayali song as part of a campaign to spread awareness about AIDS had surfaced online, causing a huge uproar among fanatics who considered it an “insult” to Islam.

Wearing burqas and jeans, the three students of a dental college in Malappuram danced on the tunes of Entammede Jimikki Kammal at Kottakkunnu junction in Malappuram town.

The three girls were also subjected to a similar kind of online vitriol that was aimed at RJ Sooraj, who hosts a primetime evening show on Radio Malayalam 98.6FM in Doha, Qatar.

On December 2, Sooraj had posted a video on Facebook applauding the girls’ efforts and espousing the cause of women’s rights and freedom of expression.

In the video, he also mentioned that he had received death threats for supporting the girls and questioned the patriarchal mindset of the religious fundamentalists.

“We will burn you in Doha. We will hit you, we will kill you. We will put you in jail. We will make you lose your job,” Sooraj said in the video, The New Indian Express reported.

Sooraj further questioned the hypocrisy of the online trolls who have expressed their support for Hadiya, while dismissing the rights of the three girls. Hadiya is the 24-year-old Hindu woman who allegedly converted to Islam after marrying 27-year-old Shafin Jahan, without the consent of her parents. The Supreme Court is hearing a case related to the marriage which the National Investigation Agency has alleged was a result of “love jihad”.

“Can I ask these kinds of people a question — a few days ago hadn’t you asked for Hadiya’s freedom as brothers? You even questioned the Supreme Court on it? But don’t these girls have the same kinds of rights like Hadiya? Why can’t they live life freely like you want Hadiya to? What is your definition of personal freedom? Is personal freedom a gift you give to people who convert and come to your religion?” Sooraj reportedly asked in the video.

However, following the online hate campaigns, Sooraj decided to post another video on Facebook, apologising for his previous comments and stated that he did not intend to hurt any “religious sentiments”.

Sooraj also reportedly urged the trollers not to target the radio station where he works and requested them to keep Radio Malayalam out of the controversy.

In his second video, Sooraj reportedly said, “I apologise. I hereby request all my Muslim friends to put this controversy to rest. Please don’t blow this up further and harm the radio station. I had no communal agenda when I put out the first video.”
