MANGALURU: Behind the wide publicity of International Yoga Day which is being orchestrated by Narendra Modi government lies the hidden agenda of cultural nationalism of RSS, said AICC member PV Mohan.
This agenda is a conspiracy to undermine the concept of nationalism founded based on secularism and egalitarian values of India. International Yoga Day does not ring truth and honesty in its intent and purpose; he said, deploring politics of cultural nationalism being pushed into the Indian society.
In the long run, the tendency to impose culturally nationalistic practices will have an adverse impact on the development of the country. Yoga has spread far and wide transcending the barriers of religion and country. Essentially a secular way leading a healthy life, RSS is hijacking yoga thereby confining this to a particular religion. The International Yoga Day does not appear to be a health-related issue. Rather it has emerged as the propaganda tool for advancing Hindutva agenda, he said.
Attempts are being made by stoking communal hatred among Hindus against minority community by raking up unnecessary controversy about yoga. "We will vehemently oppose this," said Mohan, adding that the Congress supports yoga in a way that aims at improving the health and wellbeing of the people. "However, health and wellbeing of the citizens find no place in the Modi-led central government. A mere 1% of GDP has been allotted to these issues, Mohan pointed.
USA, on the other hand, which has imported yoga spends 8% of the GDP on health. "This reflects the double-speak of the BJP government," he said. He also asked the following questions: Why does the government not celebrate farmers day? Why does Sangh Parivar oppose universalization of Fathers' Day, Valentine's Day, and World Environment day?
Th e Modi government, which has done nothing towards fulfilling the promises made during election is making use of yoga in strengthening its Hindutva agenda.
On one hand, the government is harping on 'Sabka Saath, Sab Ka Vikas' and, on the other, it does nothing to rein in minority hate mongers within. The government is yet to condemn series of attacks on churches being witnessed in the country. A programme lik e 'Ghar Wapsi has the t acit approval of the government. It has done nothing to stop the glorification of Godse , he added.
