I am actually in support of your statement, that it doesn't matter, that it is not the person's birth ( Brahman say ) but the ideology he or she espouses that should decide if that person is respectable or not.
It's the utterly chaotic nature of Indian culture.
There are 60+ million street dogs in India, the world's highest population and India has 20,000 deaths every year because of dog-attack-borne rabies. Think of the mindset of especially the Modi-loving middle class who comfortably lives, without bother, in the chaos of the constant noisiness of the five dogs per street in their neighborhoods, the screams of the occasional cat being attacked savagely by these five dogs in that street but the middle class not caring, the sound of the hundreds of millions of two-wheelers many of whom have their silencers removed by the shouting louts who ride them in triples, the tri-weekly noisy religious festivals done round the year, the annual Diwali and Dussehra festivals where the insanity and chaotic is amplified by every neighborhood setting up noisy firecrackers constantly, the chaotic roads where daily go 30 million personal cars and hundreds of millions of two-wheelers causing 450,000 accidents every year and 150,000 deaths every year... So many things. The people who don't bother eliminating these chaos generators and the gentle and beautiful cats being torn up will also not bother about participating in TV debates with rationality and gentleness. These are not rational people so they also will refuse to see the daily human artificial tragedies, injustices, disparities and atrocities that have been happening here for the last 3000 years. India is chaos and insanity personified. A magnificent example.
