  • New Delhi: A lawmaker Sakshi Maharaj, today embarrassed his party the ruling BJP by describing Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse as a "patriot."

Amid outrage at his comment, he soon retracted, saying, "I don't consider Godse a patriotic person. I take back my words if I said something by mistake. I didn't say that Godse was a patriotic person."

He had earlier said, "I feel Nathuram Godse was a patriot just as Mahatma Gandhi was."

The opposition Congress demanded that a case of treason be filed against Sakshi Maharaj. Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Tushar Gandhi said, "Sakshi Maharaj is at least honest enough to come out and say what's in his heart... The government should endorse what Sakshi Maharaj has said, they shouldn't be double faced."

The government sought to distance itself from the new controversy, which was brought up in Parliament by Congress lawmaker Husain Dalwai who alleged that Godse was honoured at a function in Maharashtra recently. "It is absolutely wrong and the government should arrest them. Why is the government silent on the issue?" he asked.

Congress members protested loudly alleging that the function was organised among others, by the Bajrang Dal, an organisation affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS, the BJP's ideological mentor.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu emphasised in the Rajya Sabha that, "There is no question of honouring such people. There is no question of the government doing it."

He also said, "We should leave the matter there, but defaming an organisation is not acceptable."

Nathuram Godse, a right-wing activist, had shot the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi thrice in the chest at point blank range on January 30, 1948. He was hanged in November 1949.

Abey yeh kon hai abb?

How many more cartoons do they have?

Lets just say, we have elected plenty of them from every party to entertain us for the next five years!!

BJP should ban the Idiot MP's from speaking, as these stupid statments nulify the good work done by government. These idiots should know that people voted them in power for Development, not for Hindutva etc. They'll be thrown out if they'll keep on talking nonsense.

Disheartening.

He IS a patriot.

Gandhi did more damage to India than the british ever did. by becoming the father of the nation.

a nation which has gandhi as a father would always be a slave country. to british, to gandhis, to anybody who would care to enslave us.

PERIOD.

His statement was twisted for the TRPs by the media, although it doesn't take away the fact he shouldn't have equated Godse and Gandhi.

For those who value truth and only truth.

Why Was Gandhi Killed (Full)::History

Not guilty :Justice Khosla after retirement, in a pen picture of the Court scene as it then passed before his mind’s eye has said:

“The highlight of the appeal before us was the discourse delivered by Nathuram Godse in his defence. He spoke for several hours, discussing, in the first instance, the facts of the case and then the motive, which had prompted him to take Mahatma Gandhi’s life……

“The audience was visibly and audibly moved. There was a deep silence when he ceased speaking. Many women were in tears and men coughing and searching for their handkerchiefs. The silence was accentuated and made deeper by the sound of an occasional subdued sniff or a muffled cough…

“I have however, no doubt that had the audience of that day been constituted into a jury and entrusted with the task of deciding Godse’s appeal. They would have brought in a verdict of ‘not guilty’ by an over-whelming majority.’

Nathuram had displayed the same ability while arguing his case before Shri Atma Charan, the Judge of the Special Court, Red Fort, Delhi.
