NEW DELHI: Ruling BJP Wednesday morning fumbled for appropriate reaction to barrage of attacks against Narendra Modi government's chief economic advisor (CEA) Arvind Subramanian after senior party leader Subramanian Swamy went after the CEA demanding his sacking from the North Block.
"Who said to US Cong on 13/3/13 the US should act against India to defend US Pharmaceuticals interests? Arvind Subramanian MoF !! Sack him!!!" Swamy said in one of his series of tweets Wednesday morning.
"Guess who encouraged Congi to become rigid on GST clauses ? Jaitely's economic adviser Arvind Subramanian of Washington DC," was another of Swamy's tweets.
The BJP, however, was foxed by this surprise and sought to brush this new public disapproval of Narendra Modi's economic advisor as his personal opinion.
"That's his opinion. We do not have to say anything," Gopal Krishna Agarwal, BJP spokesperson for economic issues, reacted to ET's queries regarding Swamy's morning attack.
"This is his statement. You can ask him, he is an MP. Party has nothing to say on this," Agarwal said when pressed further.
But, party insiders betrayed the unease within the ruling establishment over Swamy's remarks.
This (Swamy's remarks) is obviously not the official line of the party. If that was the case, he (Arvind Subramanian) would not be there. It is for the Boss (PM and BJP president) to really reign him".
But, party leaders struggled to exude confidence in their "individual opinion" line of defence given the credibility attained by Swamy after his public attack on RBI Governor wrecked Raghuram Rajan of his dreams to see his set of monetary and banking reforms through to the end.
After Raghuram Rajan's announcement of exit from the RBI, most BJP leaders ET spoke to avoided joining public argument with Swamy fearing the unknown of what may be in the store for his targets.
"Government and BJP don't need public utterances of any leader to decided continuance or discontinuances of any functionary," said a BJP functionary on the condition of anonymity.
As for the specifics of the attack on Arvind Subramanian, BJP leaders said that it was not for the BJP to contradict the facts.
"Whether his (Swamy's) claims are factually correct or incorrect it is for someone else (other than BJP) to contradict," added the party functionary indicating that onus may be on CEA to contradict if Swamy's claims merits a clarification.
