FAISALABAD: More than 2,800 domestic bio gas plants have so far been installed in 12 districts in rural Punjab during last four years under the Pakistan Domestic Bio Gas Programme, said Communication and Media officer for the programme Naeem Ahmed.

The programme was part of the Rural Support Programmes Network which took the initiative in 2009 with financial assistance from the Netherlands, and assistance from NGOs “Netherlands Development Organization” (SNV) and “WINROCK International”, to improve the living standard of people in rural areas.

According to Ahmed, Sargodha was on top of the list with the installation of 692 plants, followed by Jhang with the installation of 553 plants, Faisalabad with 481, Toba Tek Singh 343, Khushab with 186, Chiniot 153, Sahiwal 151, Sheikhpura 79, Nankana Sahib 66, Pakpattan 40, Gujranwala 38 and Okara with 19 bio gas plants installed.

These plants were being installed in different sizes of four, six, eight, 10 and 15 cubic feet at costs ranging from Rs48,000 to Rs87,000 depending on the size of the plant.

Ahmed said quality control centres had also been set up at each district to provide maintenance requirements to people having bio gas plants.

He said these bio gas plants also helped the families save Rs30,000 Rs43,000 annually by substituting fuel wood and liquid petroleum gas.
