why does russia want to attack UKrain?
1) there is a massive Russian population in Ukraine (away from the capital Kiev) which does NOT want to cosy-up to the European Union. What you have seen on the television in recent days is by no means whatsoever, as can be consistently seen in Ukraine's voting patterns, indicative of how all Ukrainians feel.
2) If Ukraine gets close to the E.U., and implicitly the west, and implicitly NATO, there will be a threat of Russia losing its only warm-water naval port in the west - Sevastopol (and smaller ports nearby) in the Crimea. Russia will NEVER EVER allow that to happen if it can help it. Strategically-speaking, when looking at this as a geo-political matter, not the stupidly over-simplified "citizens sacrificing their lives for democracy"-type thing that CBS, ABC, CNN, BBC, and NBC paint it, this is a very grave affair with massive international ramifications.
