Washington has already designated India as a "Major Defence Partner" of the United States

WASHINGTON:
A bipartisan group of half a dozen influential American lawmakers has reintroduced an important legislation in the House of Representatives which seeks to advance the US-India strategic relationship.

If enacted, the legislation would ensure that the US State Department treat India as a NATO ally for the purposes of the Arms Export Control Act.

It would send a powerful signal that defence sales to India should be prioritised according to US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, which had worked on this important legislation.

The bill HR 2123 was introduced this week by Congressman Joe Wilson, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

"India is the world's largest democracy, a pillar of stability in the region, and has shown strong commitments to export control policies," said Mr Wilson.

"This adjustment to US law will further allow the US-India partnership to flourish in line with our security commitment to the Indo-Pacific region. I am grateful for the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), led by Dr Mukesh Aghi, and their support for this legislation," he said.

The original co-sponsors of the legislation are Congressman Ami Bera - the longest serving Indian-American in the US Congress - and the House India Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressmen George Holding, Brad Sherman and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and Congressman Ted Yoho.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal 2017 included special language recognising the unique US-India defence relationship that designated India as a "Major Defence Partner" of the United States.

The language seeks unique consideration for trade and technology sharing with India and increased attention and support to advance this relationship in the areas of defence trade and technology sharing.

"The legislation bolsters national security and helps ensure full alignment between the Department of Defense and the Department of State."

"Such a change will institutionalise the gains made in the relationship and provide a more stable foundation upon which both countries can solidify this unique defence partnership," USISPF said.

Although powerful in its own right, the NDAA FY 2017 has no legal bearing on the State Department's body of legislation, nor does it compel the State Department to view defence with India more favourably, USISPF said in a statement.

To fulfill the spirit and intent of the NDAA 2017, the US-India Enhanced Cooperation Act would amend the Arms Export Control Act to put India on par with NATO allies and Israel, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

"We applaud Congressman Wilson's leadership in reintroducing this important bill. We are confident the US Congress will continue to enact legislation that bolsters the bilateral. The great power competition is not lost on Members of Congress, who understand the strategic imperative for a deeper relationship with India," said Mr Aghi, president and CEO of USISPF.

"This legislation would be a major breakthrough for the US-India defense relationship. As Chairman of USISPF, I support this move because it would ultimately further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. The future is bright for the US-India relationship and we hope this legislation is enacted soon," USISPF chairman John Chambers said.

Stuff like this always makes me smile. America and India as friends - it's like those b1tchy girls at school who were only friends when they had someone else to gossip about.

The Americans can never be trusted, and the Indians know this.
The Indians will always try to drive a hard bargain, and the Americans know this.

This might be a double edged sword btw. If you research said Congressmen, you will find that they are some of the most sturdy supporters for continued sanctions on Russia, and penalizing allies for not boycotting Russia too - especially in military procurement programs (see Turkey for example).
The Indian Armed Forces have pretty close relations with Russia, and are a major source of funding for the Russian Defense Industry too. Same goes with Iran.

Well it's still a better relationship of dialogue in comparison to US-Pak relations of alms giving. This allows us to buy goodies, but also keep trading with those who have been friends of old like Iran. Either way, we are better even our differences with our friends and partners. We are capable of finding middle ground, this is not possible for Pak because of Madrassa logic. Bilateral trade between India and US is around 126 Billion in 2017 which is about a third of Pak GDP.

2019: India-US relations getting stronger
2020:India gets sophisticated US military hardware on subsidized rates"
2021: India best ally of US
2022:India ditched after US interest fulfilled in Asia,Slowly US starts blaming India for it's own failures.
2025: US" India should do more",we supported India so much and they gave us nothing, etc "
2026: India Sad :(
2027: "India returns to Russian Camp"
2028" Congress passes bill to bring Bangladesh on par to NATO Allies "
2029" Bangladesh happy :-)"
2030: US-Bangladesh relations getting stronger"
And the cycle continues....

What alms giving? US pays Pak for the supply routes and logistics support for the last 17 years.

You may have got a few points right in India's favor - but bear in mind there is a lot in play. Those lawmakers (Senators/Congressmen) also want loyalty in return, which will mean that you cut off the Russian supply of Defense. Do you seriously think India plans to have it both ways? Getting Oil from Iran was something the Americans were willing to overlook, but do you think that supply would last if they go straight out & start a War there (something that appears to be in works).

If India (had) any intentions of acquiring the F-35, that went out the window the day they placed the order for the S-400.

So yeah, things appear to be looking good for India, as far the US is concerned, but its gonna come at a cost. We'll see how the boys in Kremlin see it play out.

As for your point on the US-Pak relations, there is nothing new you've brought to table that hasn't been there for over 2 decades. And yet, they still need us...and will continue for the years & years to follow.

Middle ground - you're a client state, willing to limbo beneath whatever bar is set for dollar.

The difference between us and you is this. Our ruling elite share the same prostitute mentality as you - our awam doesn't. You Indians are in it whole hog.

I hope this bill will pass and then India will get screwed for a long time to come.
